Building Bridges Between People in the Age of Digital Recording
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2005) — The Recording Academy®'s Producers & Engineers Wing (P&E Wing) continues to create and participate in events throughout the country that establish necessary technological and personal connections at a time when the music industry continues to undergo an amazing evolution.
Most recently, the Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy and The Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing hosted the Producers Panel at the eighth annual Atlantis Music Conference & Festival, held in downtown Atlanta Aug. 10 – 13. The event featured more than 300 regional music artists performing at 18 venues throughout the city to industry professionals and insiders from points as far away as Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Nashville. The panel, held on Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Sheraton Hotel, brought together producers and engineers from the region as well as the nation to discuss how technology is changing the face of music. Panelists assembled by the P&E Wing included Atlanta's own Tricky Stewart (Britney Spears, Madonna, Mya, J.T. Money); sound designer and "laptop" producer/engineer Richard Devine (Slicker, Monolake, Aphex Twin); Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, Metallica); Bryan Michael Cox (Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Usher); Matt Still (Elton John, OutKast, Nelly); and Keith Hillebrandt (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails). The panel was moderated by Glenn Schick, the P& E Wing's Atlanta Chapter committee chair.
The Producers Panel touched on key issues facing the music industry today, such as Mike Clink's observation that the decline of the conventional studio had diminished the opportunity for mentoring between generations of producers and engineers, and Tricky Stewart's comments about how Pro Tools has made access to music easier for a wider array of artists.
"There was a lot of great discussion about many aspects of music technology that really caught the attention of the audience," says Mark Willis, Partner/Co-Founder of the Atlantis Music Conference & Festival and Vice President of the Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy. "Atlantis gets a very young, upstart audience and they're looking eagerly for guidance. That's just what the Producers Panel gave them: it addressed the technical issues they want to know about, but at the same time it exposed them to the music industry culture of other cities, such as New York and Los Angeles. I'm looking forward to doing a Producers Panel at Atlantis every year from now on."

Angelia Bibbs-Sanders, Recording Academy Vice President, Member Services, stated, "Events such as the Producers Panel held at the Atlantis Music Conference are one of the many ways through which the Producers & Engineers Wing strives to involve the music community by providing attendees with current and relevant information on the state of the recording industry. Our ongoing commitment to expanding these lines of communication and interaction between The Recording Academy and the extremely diverse group of professionals that we represent is fueled by our collective passion for music. Through these panels, we encourage others to take part and help shape the current and future directions of our industry, while embracing and utilizing the technology and innovation which furthers our musical development."
The Producers Panel at the Atlantis Music Conference & Festival comes on the heels of the highly successful Texas Studio Sessions in Houston, Dallas and Austin last month. These sessions covered "Mixing In The Box" with Phil Tan; "Recording In 5.1 Surround" with Elliot Scheiner; and "The Art Of Recording" with Al Schmitt, which emphasized recording vocals and piano.
