Fall Semester (2007) – Sabbatical Leave

Sabbatical Project: Staging Practices for Baroque Opera

The sabbatical project was divided into two portions:

(a). the Research component which involved extensive reading,

research, and in-depth study of a wide variety of books,

articles, and videos of Baroque Opera productions during

the period of May-August, 2007, as well as attending live

productions of GIULIO CESARE (Handel) at the Lyric Opera

of Chicago, IPHIGENIE EN TAURIDE (Gluck) at the

Metropolitan Opera, and L’ISLE DE MERLIN (Gluck) at the

Spoleto Festival USA

(b). the Creative component involved devising staging for GIULIO

CESARE (Handel), to be produced by ASU Lyric Opera

Theatre. This aspect of the project was exceptionally

challenging and took approximately 400-500 hours of

extensive and detailed work during August-December, 2007.
