405. Burk, Dale A. NEW INTERPRETATIONS (Cowboy Art; Multiple signatures). n.p.: Western Life, 1969. First Edition. Book. Gilt-stamped 4to cloth. 204pp. Illus. A presentation copy by Burk to the previous owner. However, this is a phenomenal & unique copy & we cannot fully describe or picture it for you. Burk, as a writer-photographer, wrote about & photographed a large group of mostly Montana-based western artists & then produced this book profiling them. The wonder of this copy is that its previous owner knew and/or contacted many of these artists. They inscribed notes or comments (in pencil & ink) in the book AND ALSO many of them sketched original work (from small vignettes to larger pieces) in the book, in ink, felt pen, & pencil. Several of them signed under their art represented in the volume. Represented are, including spouses & others, by signature & in many cases, sketches (signified by (sk)): Leo Beaulaurier (sk), Sheryl Bodily, John Boland, James Brubaker, John Clarke (sk), Jack Currie, Bob Emerson (sk), Midlred Emerson, Fred Fellows (sk), Dick Flood, Bud Helbig, O'Neil Jones (sk), Nancy McLaughlin (Powell), Bob Morgan (sk), Darlene Morgan (sk), Bette Myers, Bob Miller (sk), Merle Olson (sk), Mary Parker, Les Peters (sk) (Peters even signed two versions of a Leanin' Tree card featuring his art!), Roy Porter, Ace Powell (sk), Dave Powell (sk), Keith Powell (sk), Albert Racine (sk), Rex Rieke (sk), Tom Sander (sk) (note: Sander is not represented in the book, but inscribed it & signed a large card), Gary Schildt (sk), John Segesman (sk), Shorty Shope, Elmer Springer (sk), Branson Stevenson (sk), Jack Whitney, Christy Ann Winter, Carl Wood (sk). In a case or two, it appears that owners of art appearing in the book have signed (Paul Masa, Doris Masa). LAID IN LETTERS WITH ENVELOPES: Segesman, Don M. Hill (carver), Dick Flood (Idaho Falls Trailside Gallery owner, with a wonderful letter relating a two week visit in Arizona with Ted DeGrazia, with color snapshot of Flood, including notes, at DeGrazia gallery; Flood notes he has also seen or will see Olaf Wieghorst, Walt Coburn, Lone Wolf, & Joe DeYong); he further notes his purchases of works by Carl Borg, Edward Borein, William R. Leigh, Frank Tenney Johnson, & Charlie Russell. Also, eleven letters/envelopes from Merle Olson (Bigfork, Mont.). We can supply limited, selected digital photos on demand on to seriously interested potential buyer(s). No dj with this copy. PLEASE NOTE: This is not the limited & numbered edition. Very Good. Hardcover. (#1104015) $900.90
406. Burke, John M. ("Arizona John"). "Compiled by ... Burke... with the authority of General W. F. Cody ("Buffalo Bill"). BUFFALO BILL From Prairie to Palace An Authentic History of the Wild West With Sketches, Stories of Adventure, and Anecdotes of "Buffalo Bill", the Hero of the Plains. Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co, 1893. First Edition. Book. Beautifully bound in gilt-stamped & gilt-pictorial muted rust colored cloth. Pictorial aspect is a bust of Buffalo Bill inside an oval decorated on the exterior with portions of a rifle, a saddle, & a lariat. Cover title is in gilt with attractively embellished print of the era. Spine titles in gilt. 275pp. Illustrated with numerous halftone prints & portraits. One page of advertising in rear. Three frontispiece portraits, two of Cody & one of Burke. On front paste down is a presentation in an unknown hand, "To D. F. Abel Feb 1899". Rear paste down has small bookseller's label of King Bros, San Francisco. This book's rarity is noted in the 2005 (non-facsimile) paperback reprint, where the writer of the Intro, Dr. Jason Berger, says that only one of four modern Cody biographers even cited this book, & then just barely. Very few copies of this book have been offered for sale in the last eighty odd years, & few libraries have a copy. This copy good plus. Moderate wear to extremities of covers, and just worn through at bottom corners. One minor white mark on back cover. One leaf near back has uneven 2 1/2" tear, now carefully closed with thin, archival material. Hinge just starting inside rear blank page. Of minor annoyance is that a few pages have now partially erased pencil marks all over the page. These pages are as follows: half-title & facing page, title page (fortunately very lightly on this page & mostly erased), dedication page (almost unnoticeable), & eight pages near the back. It looks like a child did some random doodling during one of Buffalo Bill's shows! Fortunately his/her attempts were limited. As noted, this is a truly rare book.
