A presentation copy by Burk to the previous owner. However, this is a phenomenal & unique copy & we cannot fully describe or picture it for you. Burk, as a writer-photographer, wrote about & photographed a large group of mostly Montana-based western artists & then produced this book profiling them. The wonder of this copy is that its previous owner knew and/or contacted many of these artists. They inscribed notes or comments (in pencil & ink) in the book AND ALSO many of them sketched original work (from small vignettes to larger pieces) in the book, in ink, felt pen, & pencil. Several of them signed under their art represented in the volume. Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co, 1893. First Edition. Book. Beautifully bound in gilt-stamped & gilt-pictorial muted rust colored cloth. Pictorial aspect is a bust of Buffalo Bill inside an oval decorated on the exterior with portions of a rifle, a saddle, & a lariat. Cover title is in gilt with attractively embellished print of the era. Spine titles in gilt. 275pp. Illustrated with numerous halftone prints & portraits. One page of advertising in rear. Three frontispiece portraits, two of Cody & one of Burke. On front paste down is a presentation in an unknown hand, "To D. F. Abel Feb 1899". Rear paste down has small bookseller's label of King Bros, San Francisco. This book's rarity is noted in the 2005 (non-facsimile) paperback reprint, where the writer of the Intro, Dr. Jason Berger, says that only one of four modern Cody biographers even cited this book, & then just barely. Very few copies of this book have been offered for sale in the last eighty odd years, & few libraries have a copy. This copy good plus. Moderate wear to extremities of covers, and just worn through at bottom corners. One minor white mark on back cover. One leaf near back has uneven 2 1/2" tear, now carefully closed with thin, archival material. Hinge just starting inside rear blank page. Of minor annoyance is that a few pages have now partially erased pencil marks all over the page. These pages are as follows: half-title & facing page, title page (fortunately very lightly on this page & mostly erased), dedication page (almost unnoticeable), & eight pages near the back. It looks like a child did some random doodling during one of Buffalo Bill's shows! Fortunately his/her attempts were limited. As noted, this is a truly rare book. Three photos (each a different color tone) are on each of the end panels. The central 2 panels reproduce the famous photo taken by Wm. Prettyma n of the Run into the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma in 1893. The words, "Go West!" are printed at the top of the right central panel. Original pictorial gilt-stamped cloth. 529pp + 32pp of publisher's ads. Illustrated with engravings. Folding map, "Sketch Map Showing Route of Richd J. Bush During His Travels & Explorations North Eastern Asia" (which included trailing end of Aleutian chain). Binder's label, "Bound by W. Bone & Son Fleet St. London". Bush was to make preliminary surveys for the Russo - American telegraph line. The plan which sent this expedition off was ultimately to lay a line between San Francisco & Moscow, via Siberia. This copy in original cloth has been rebacked under the original spine, with new endpapers matching the originals. This copy was never read, as the signatures have not been cut at the top. The covers are worn at the corners. There is some darkening from old stain along the cover edges. Nevertheless, a good+, tight copy copy in great shape for another 140 years. 1872/1871 Good+.
