Remote Access 2010 – external access to the network
You can now access your user account from outside the college via a web browser. You will be able to access files in your user area, shared areas that you have permissions to see the College Intranet and Blackboard.
Note: Students can access their documents and shared drives.
Host Checker – the host checker is a new feature that will check to see if you have up to date antivirus/Internet Security installed on your PC/Apple Mac and the definitions are up to date. This will help protect the College network against viruses. If you choose not to allow the host checker or you do not have adequate antivirus protection installed on your PC/Apple Mac then you will not have access to files. You will still have access to URL’s; Blackboard, intranet, etc.
Logon procedure
In your internet browser type:-
https://remote.abingdon-witney.ac.uk (note the https)
You might get this security alert, but press ‘Continue to this website’.
Then the logon screen appears
Type your college username and password.
In order to access files, you will need to install the host checker.
Click install
To run the host checker, click ‘always or ‘yes’
If you have up to date antivirus software and definitions then you will have full access to your ‘My Documents’ and shared drives. You will also have access to Blackboard. Depending on the type of user, you will see different drives.
If you do not run the host checker then you will a window similar to this.
You will still have access to Blackboard but not to any files.
Remote Access - working practise
We suggest that you create a folder on your home computer called "College Remote Access", and you do all your college work in it for uploading.
Shutdown all other applications and connections before logging onto the remote access site.
Logon and download onto your local hard disk any file/s you require to work on.
Sign out of the session and close your browser. (You don't need to be connected to the internet to work on your files once they are downloaded)
When you've finished your work, reconnect to the internet. Logon and upload all the files you have changed or created. Be careful to give the file an extension when naming it e.g. documentv2.docx, otherwise it will be given the extension document.txt.
End the session, by signing out and closing your browser.
If you leave the session open and don’t touch the computer, then you will be warned after 5 minutes that the session will be terminated unless you reply.
If for any reason you leave your PC, screen lock it or better still log out of the connection.
Logging off
When you are finished sign out, clicking on the top right of screen
Then close the browser. You must close the browser to tidily and securely end the session.
Possible problems
You CANNOT change your password, when connected remotely, this is a security feature. If your password runs out you have to come into college to change it.
If you get an Access Denied or similar error when trying to access the site
On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click ‘Internet Options’.
Click the Security tab, ‘Trusted sites’
Click the ‘Sites’ button.
In the “Add this Web site to the zone:” box enter the address https://remote.abingdon-witney.ac.uk
Click the Add button.
Click OK twice
Problems with opening files
You must have a correct software installed on your computer to open the files you have downloaded, e.g. to open a Word document you must have Microsoft Word installed. There may be problems with the version of software you have, particularly if it’s old.
Can’t find files on the college network after I’ve uploaded them
Check the file extensions, because if you uploaded the file without giving it an extension the Remote Access gives the file a .txt extension.
