Pathos:

  • His main concern is his wife, his daughter and our God.

  • Emphasized that he would do whatever it takes to protect his family.

  • Portrayed himself as a normal citizen and asked viewers to move to more important issues at hand.

  • Clinton puts the viewers in his shoes because at the end of the day presidents are humans too.

  • He Keeps a soft tone throughout the entire speech pleading for understanding.

Logos:

  • Used to inform the public about affairs.

  • “This afternoon in this room, from this chair, I testified before the Office of Independent Counsel and the grand jury” (Clinton)-extremely descriptive and uses logic to show he was being truthful in front of these important groups.

  • “We have important work to do – real opportunities to seize, real problems to solve, real security matters to face.”

  • He asked Americans to move on to bigger matter in hand.

  • With appeal to logic, Clinton hoped that Americans would realize the scandal for overly blow-up gossip and the destruction of a private life, and return attention to more important matters.

Ethos:

  • Clinton was a president, but lost credibility

  • Infidelity could have bled over from marriage to presidency

  • “at no time did I ask anyone to lie, to hide, or destroy evidence or take any unlawful actions”

  • Emphasized the fact that he did not lie and express regret

  • Tried reasoning why he initially denied his affair ‘’to protect myself from embarrassment of my own conduct”

  • Emphasized on protecting his family

  • Clintons authoritative tone and request to return to other important issues reminded the people that he was still the president of the United States.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, his admission of guilt speech that Clinton addressed to the nation may have persuaded some to move on from this issue, but we know that it seriously damaged Vice President Al Gore’s campaign to presidency in 2000. His authoritative

Tone through the speech influenced the listeners to do just that, move on, by appealing to their pathos, Logos and ethos.
