SCOTT STRICKLIN

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach
Scott Stricklin enters his third season as the Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach at the University of Georgia. Since arriving in Athens, Stricklin, 44, has created an atmosphere of excitement around the program, starting with the current student-athletes, extending to the former lettermen and to Georgia baseball fans around the state. He has organized numerous lettermen functions to help reunite the Bulldogs and steered the $12 million Foley Field Revival project that was completed for the start of the 2015 season.

In his first year with the Bulldogs, he led Georgia back to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament for the first time since 2012. Georgia increased its overall and SEC win total from 2013 while playing a league-high 30 games against ranked teams. The Bulldogs compiled an 11-game winning streak during the year, which was the longest since 2009, and they captured a series over seventh-ranked South Carolina, the first over a top 10 ranked team since 2011.

In year two of the Stricklin era, Georgia posted its first SEC road sweep since 2009 when it won three straight over Tennessee and then followed that up by claiming its first league series at No. 7 South Carolina since 1994. Also, Georgia won a series over No. 11 Florida State and swept a two-game set from Clemson for the first time since 2009. In May, Georgia combined on a one-hit shutout of Georgia Tech at Turner Field in front of 18,792 fans, which ranked as the largest crowd in the nation to see a college baseball regular season game in 2015. The Bulldog pitching staff posted a sub 4.00 ERA for only the second time since 1977. Offensively from 2014 to 2015, the Bulldogs improved their batting average 11 points and increased their home run total by 27, going from 13 to 40. Georgia had seven players selected in the 2015 MLB draft, which marked the most since 2011.

Stricklin, who led his alma mater Kent State to five NCAA Regionals and the 2012 College World Series, was hired to lead the UGA program on June 3, 2013. In 11 seasons as a head coach, he owns a career record of 420-245-1. A two-time All-Mid-American Conference catcher, he was a 23rd round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 1993. He played five seasons of professional baseball and reached the Triple-A level with the Twins.

Stricklin graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Kent State in 1995. He and his wife Cheri have three children: Sydney (13), Cale (11) and Keaton (8).

Fred CORRAL

Asst. Coach/Pitching

Fred Corral, one of the most respected pitching coaches in the country, begins his third season as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs.

Corral arrived at Georgia in June of 2013 to direct the pitching staff after spending four seasons as pitching coach at the University of Memphis. During his career, he has served as an assistant coach in charge of the pitching staff at Tennessee, Oklahoma, Sacramento City College and San Joaquin Delta College plus as an instructor in the professional ranks with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos.

A total of 72 pitchers have been drafted under his tutelage including 12 in the top 10 rounds with eight reaching the Major Leagues. The progress of Georgia’s pitchers under Corral is evident, as seven have been selected in the MLB draft since 2014 including six last season.

Corral is married to the former Cynthia Drost, of Ripon, Calif., and they have three children: Kaitlyn Joy (15), Justin Jerome (11) and Jordan Patrick (4). Also, they raised two nieces, Marisa (25) and Chelsea (22), and two nephews, Michael (27) and Robert (21).

Scott DAELEY

Asst. Coach/Hitting Recruiting Coordinator

Scott Daeley enters his third season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Georgia baseball program.

Daeley, 38, serves as Georgia’s hitting coach, works with the outfielders and is the third base coach. He arrived at Georgia from Kent State in June of 2013 where he was a member of Scott Stricklin’s staff for nine years.

In Daeley’s first season in Athens, Georgia’s highlights included returning to the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2012. In the past two years, four Bulldog hitters have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft in Nelson Ward, Hunter Cole, Jared Walsh and Zack Bowers. Also, outfielder Keegan McGovern earned Freshman All-SEC honors. Perfect Game’s College Recruiting Rankings for the Class of 2015 had Georgia’s group at No. 22 nationally and the Class of 2016 checked in at No. 14.

A native of Orange, Calif., Daeley received a business degree from Wake Forest in 2002. He was a 31st round draft pick of San Francisco and played four years of professional baseball. Scott and his wife, Alison, have two daughters, Sloan (7) and Paige (5).

Jimmy RIDER

Volunteer Coach

Jimmy Rider, a former All-America shortstop at Kent State, is in his second season as the volunteer coach for Georgia. Rider, 25, will work with the infielders, assist Scott Daeley with the hitters and serve as the first base coach.

A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., Rider ended his career as the all-time hits leader in the Mid-American Conference. A four-year starter and team captain for the Flashes, Rider was the catalyst behind Kent State’s run to the 2012 College World Series. A 26th round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012, he spent three seasons playing professional baseball in the Pirates and Boston Red Sox organizations.

Mitchell BOGGS

Undergraduate Asst. Coach

Former Georgia standout and Major Leaguer Mitchell Boggs begins his first season as an undergraduate assistant coach. He will assist Fred Corral with the pitching staff.

A native of Dalton, Ga., Boggs enjoyed a six-year career in the Major Leagues including winning a World Series with St. Louis in 2011. Boggs pitched for the Bulldogs from 2003-05 and helped Georgia to the 2004 SEC title and a third place finish at the College World Series. He was drafted in the fifth round by the Cardinals in 2005 and made his Major League debut in 2008.

He will be completing requirements for a degree in consumer economics. He, and his wife LeLe, have a one-year-old son, Mitchell Jr.

SEC Baseball (Page 13) – New Text, Bracket and Logo

The Southeastern Conference, with its storied 82-year history of athletic achievements and academic excellence, has built perhaps the greatest tradition of intercollegiate competition in baseball of any league in the country since its inception in 1933.

An SEC squad has now appeared in the College World Series 30 of the last 31 years, including four teams in 2015. Seven SEC teams were selected for NCAA Regional play with five advancing to NCAA Super Regionals. The SEC has sent 54 teams to the College World Series since 1990. That was accomplished despite no SEC teams making the field in 1992. LSU has now been to Omaha 14 times, Florida nine times, South Carolina six times, Georgia and Mississippi State five times, Arkansas four times, while Alabama, Tennessee and Vanderbilt have been three times each. Auburn has been twice.

SEC teams have won 10 of the last 25 national championships, with LSU winning six (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009), South Carolina winning two (2010, 2011), Vanderbilt taking home the title in 2014 and Georgia claiming the 1990 title. The SEC has finished runner up nine times in that span, 1997, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The SEC Baseball Tournament drew more than 130,000 fans in 2015, better than 7,000 per game. The event has become the Birmingham metro’s highest attended sporting event annually, second in the state only to NASCAR races at Talladega. The entire SEC Baseball Tournament was broadcast live on national television for the first time in the history of the event.

At the conclusion of the season, the top five spots on the national average attendance charts were SEC teams, with each of those five programs averaging better than 7,300 fans per game.

The SEC had seven players selected in the first round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. Those seven picks represented five different schools. The SEC has now had a first-round MLB selection each year since 1991 and 105 total in the first round during that time.
