1004 Globe Trekker Special: Pirates, Galleons & Treasure — Megan sets out in the footsteps of famous mariners and renegades of the Caribbean to learn firsthand about 250 years of perilous treasure hunting and brutal competition among the Spanish, English, Dutch, French and Portuguese. These pirates were vying for gold, silver and other riches. Galleons were sunk, thousands were killed and, for centuries after the New World was discovered in 1492, it was the pirates who ruled the waves. Megan

1005 Tunisia & Libya — Ian Wright begins his trek in Tunis, where he explores the lively markets. He visits El Djem, an enormous coliseum, heads to an oasis in Tamerza and tours Nefta, the center of Sufi mysticism. Ian searches for the “Star Wars” set in Tozeur, hunts with desert greyhounds in Douz, visits a cave dwelling in Matmata and explores the island of Djerba before stopping off at the site of General Rommel’s last stand. Next it’s off to Libya and a trip to the souks of Tripoli. Ian tours the magnificent Roman ruins at Leptis Magna, then heads south through the desert to Sabha, where he skis down the sand dunes. His final trek takes him to the rugged Akakus Mountains. (Feeds 5/1/11)

1006 Central China — Megan explores Shanghai, where she tries her hand at contortionism with the famous acrobats. She learns about the silk trade in Suzhou, travels by train through the Yellow Mountains, fishes the Yangtze River, visits the caves at Dazu and marvels at the Terracotta Army in X’ian. 1007 Micronesia — Micronesia is a chain of more than 2,000 islands, and Megan starts on Guam, site of a U.S. military base. Next it’s off to Pohnpei, the capital island, where she hikes through lush vegetation to the Kepirohi waterfall. Megan explores the archaeological ruins of Nan Madol, dives among sunken Japanese warships at Chuuk and kayaks on Jellyfish Lake in Palau. She ends her travels on Yap, where she observes a colony of hump-backed turtles and swims with the manta rays. (Feeds 5/15/11)

1008 Sri Lanka & Maldives — Megan begins her visit in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, where she samples the exotic cuisine. She tries stilt fishing at Weligama, visits a Buddhist temple in Matara, explores a topaz mine near Ratnapura, tours an elephant orphanage in Pinjnewala and takes part in Esala Perahera, Sri Lanka’s biggest festival. 1009 Globe Trekker Special: World War II in Europe — Our Trekkers visit many of the European sites that played a major role in World War II. From the forests of Compiegne in northern France to the island of Crete, where veterans and locals recount the first major airborne invasion by the Germans, this episode takes viewers on a haunting journey of discovery. 1012 Venice City Guide — Justine Shapiro takes in the city’s landmarks nestled along the Grand Canal — the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and St. Mark’s Square and Basilica. She cheers on the racers at the Regata Storica, an historic gondola competition full of pomp and circumstance. She walks the red carpet at Venice’s Film Festival, views the art at the city’s Biennale Festival and enjoys medieval festivals on the mainland in Monselice and Asolo.
