SJ GAMTTEP:
The South Jersey Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program
Director: Kauser Jahan, Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Rowan University
The SJ GAMTTEP Program
The South Jersey GAMTTEP program is a partnership between the Millville School District and the College of Engineering at Rowan University. Millville Public Schools is the Lead Education Agency for the Southern New Jersey GAMTTEP Collaborative.
GAMTTEP stands for the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program. The program is named after Garrett A. Morgan, an African-American inventor famous for his traffic light signal innovation. GAMTTEP’s purpose is to “improve the preparation of students, particularly women and minorities, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through curriculum development and other activities related to transportation.” Program objectives are:
To build a bridge between America’s youth and the transportation
community;
To improve elementary and secondary (K-12) level students’ skills in
STEM through such means as curriculum development, internships,
mentoring programs, and other transportation-related activities;
To facilitate partnerships among government, academia, and the
private sector;
To increase understanding of the transportation industry and careers,
and advance transportation workforce development.
Preparation for the South Jersey GAMTTEP Progam
The first, second and third quarter s were spent in developing recruiting materials, a website and identifying clinic modules and reflective activities for the SJ GAMTTEP Program. Details of the tasks accomplished are provided below:
Recruitment Tools
(Target Counties: Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cape May)
Flyers, brochures and letters were sent to High School Principals for distribution amongst interested students. A total of 86 applications were received, of which 25 were chosen and invited to participate in the SJ GAMTTEP Program.
Surveys
Prepared surveys for participants to gauge impact of clinic modules and overall workshop experience were prepared.
Brochure
A brochure was developed for publicizing the SJ GAMTTEP Program.
SJ GAMTTEP Website
A website was created that provides basic information about the program, activities, handouts, important engineering links, etc.; application, survey forms, flyers, and brochures have been established. Basic information is available at http://users.rowan.edu/~jahan/GAMTTEP/index.htm.
This site is continuously updated as needed to boost outreach for K-12 educators.
Field Trips
Several field trips were arranged to allow the participants to gain a first-hand look at important transportation and engineering technologies. Students visited the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm in Atlantic City to connect the importance of the need for clean, sustainable energy to engineering technologies. Additionally, a field trip was arranged with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the students to come and observe the aviation engineering testing facilities.
Transportation
The original proposal for the SJ GAMTTEP Program planned for providing transportation for the participating students. However, due to an unforeseen rise in fuel costs it was decided to have the students provide their own transportation. Reimbursement was provided based on total distance traveled to and from Rowan University.
Keynote Speaker
Raj Arora, P.E., Executive Vice President of Arora Systems Group, LLC, was the invited keynote speaker for the SJ GAMTTEP Program.
The following tasks for the SOUTH JERSEY GAMTTEP program had been identified in the proposal for the fourth quarter (July through August of 2008).

Arora, PE, is Executive Vice President of Arora Engineers, Inc. (MBE), a multi-disciplinary engineering design and construction management firm, headquartered in Chadds Ford, PA with offices in Woodbridge, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. Raj graduated from the University of Maryland in 2000 with a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering. He is a licensed Fire Protection Engineer in six states, including New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Virginia, and the District of Columbia. As the Executive Vice President of Arora, Raj is responsible for the general administration and engineering management of the firm. His duties include business development, project oversight, and client relations. In addition, Raj has served as Project Manager on many technically challenging projects. He is currently directing two high profile projects for the MTA/Metro-North Railroad at the historic Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
