Please use the study notes below to assist you in preparing for your Geography assessment. Remember that this is merely a study guide and not a layout of the assessment.



SS4G1 The student will be able to locate important physical and man-made features

in the United States.

  1. Locate major physical features of the United States; include the Atlantic Coastal Plain,

Great Plains, Continental Divide, the Great Basin, Death Valley, Gulf of Mexico, St.

L awrence River, and the Great Lakes.

  1. Locate major man-made features; include New York City, NY;Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; and the Erie Canal.



Atlantic Coastal Plains

  • The Coastal Plains are located on the East Coast

  • Coastal Plains are located in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, District of Columbia, and Maryland.

St. Lawrence River

  • This river connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Runs close to Canada, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.

Great Plains

Great Basin

  • Largest watershed of North America

  • Covers most of Nevada, ½ of Utah and small portions of California, Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming

Death Valley

  • Is the lowest, driest, and hottest location in North America

  • Located in California’s Mojave Desert

The Great Lakes

  • Located in the Northeastern part of the U.S

  • Close to Canada

  • Lake Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario, Michigan

Gulf of Mexico

  • 11th largest body of water in the world.

  • Bordered by U.S. states Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida

Continental Divide

  • Includes the following states: Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico
