South Jersey High School Rowing Association – Shore Division
To all High School coaches and club members, the call has finally been answered…
We are in the early stages of putting together an organization that will protect all the interests of our high school rowers. With the growth of rowing in and around the Tri-State Area at or near the choke point, our options are slowly dwindling.
This organization will provide a forum for every coach to voice their opinion, have input and help us to maintain a strong and forward thinking group. We will be here for one reason, to protect ALL of our rowers and clubs. We teach the ultimate team sport, so now is the time to put together the “Ultimate Team”.
The purpose of this organization will be to guarantee a race course for our youth to prepare for the big races and to allow them the platform they need to gain entry into those races. The Scholastic Nationals are currently moving toward a process in which you must qualify, and if we are not able to gain entry into any of these races, our kids will stay home.
Also, it will allow us to start a program with only one intention, the best interest of US. We have put the beginning foundation together, but just like our sport, we are requesting a team effort. We want and need the coaches and clubs input in this new organization.
Below are some of the main topics we have been discussing:
All 7 Atlantic County High Schools and 3 Rowing Clubs are eligible to join, plus Ocean City and Vineland – making this a 12-team organization. Each team may have one representative (regardless of gender).
There will be a 5 person Board of Directors.
We are currently discussing having up to 3 “regular” season races, (Flick style) on Lake Lenape, that every school would be eligible for two “home races”. There could be “invited” schools for each race also.
We have our Atlantic County High School Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 15th, that would crown our best boats and boys and girls teams.
We may also try to coordinate a mutual relationship with the schools rowing on the Cooper River, therefore having another venue to race and visa versa.
We are looking into buying a buoy system for Lake Lenape.
Our next meeting will be the first one open to everyone, if you can’t make it, please send a representative. The meeting will be on Thursday, March 31 and start precisely at 7:30pm, and end no later than 9:15pm. The location will be at the Tilton Inn, in the back meeting room.
