SS8H10 The student will evaluate key post-World War II developments of Georgia from 1945 to 1970.

  1. a. Analyze the impact of the transformation of agriculture on Georgia’s growth.

  2. b. Explain how the development of Atlanta, including the roles of mayors William B. Hartsfield and Ivan Allen, Jr., and major league sports, contributed to the growth of Georgia.

  3. c. Discuss the impact of Ellis Arnall.




Element of the Standard

Important information about Element

a. Transformation of agriculture on Georgia’s growth

-Agriculture was less dominant than before WWII

-People had moved from farms to work in wartime factories, led to growth of cities

-Demand for cotton fell, new crops grown were peanuts, soybeans, corn

-Population majority switched from rural to cities



b. Development of Atlanta/growth of Georgia as related to elements listed below

-After WWII Atlanta gained many industries and gained over 100 square miles of land

-Transportation increased with the airport, MARTA, and improved highways

-Today more than 50% of GA’s population lives in the Atlanta metro area


b. William B. Hartsfield

-6 term mayor, made Atlanta the aviation hub of the southeast

-civil rights activist; hired African Americans as police officers, fought for school integration which worked at 4 previously all white high schools



b. Ivan Allen, Jr.

-mayor of Atlanta in the 1960s; civil rights activist- removed “Colored” and “White” signs around Atlanta among other actions

-Oversaw construction of public facilities including the first Braves stadium



b. Major league sports

-Began to arrive in Atlanta in the 1960s due to Ivan Allen, Jr.’s construction of venues

-1966: Braves and Falcons play at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium

-1968: Hawks come to Atlanta, we now have ice hockey, WNBA in addition


c. Ellis Arnall

-Won 1942 election; corrected university accreditation issues and Georgia’s schools were reaccredited

-Established a board of corrections to oversee prisons



-Led Georgia in becoming the first state to allow 18 year olds to vote
