Study Guide for Chapter 30 Lab Exam

* Be able to compare (similar) and contrast (difference) archegonia and antheridia.

* Based on the "Peat Moss Lab", be able to calculate the percent increase in water retention of Sphagnum peat moss given information provided in a data table ( make sure you are able to show calculations as to how you achieved the answer for percent increase/water holding capacity).

* Four microscopes will be setup that each have a slide of liverwort life-cycle (cupule, antheridiophore, archegoniophore, & sporophyte). You can change the fine focus knob, but you CAN NOT touch or move the slide. State which stage is in the field-of-view, the particular structure at the end of the pointer is the same one you had to identify and label inside your lab drawing, and give a complete sentence to support your decision (i.e. what structures are apparent and overall shape / location of reproductive items). You will need to use proper spelling for the internal structure at the end of the pointer!

* Are gemmules a form of sexual or asexual reproduction in liverworts?

* Describe the step-by-step process how gemmules propagate a liverwort species.

* (only for 1st hour Bio. II) Based on the "Identifying Fern Sporangia Lab"; which fluid cause the spores to be released from the sporangia faster? Water or Glycerin
