Sub: Analysis of Circle Wise Revenue Growth along with BSNL Revenue Growth and Market Share for the Quarter ending December 2012 of F.Y. 2012-13.


  1. This is with reference to the Quarterly Gross Revenue figure earned by the telecom sector as published in the TRAI website for all operators. Based on the data available for the quarter ending December 2012, the detailed information at the Operator level has been compiled and is attached at Annexure-1.




  1. The Annexure-2 analyses the growth of the revenue on the Y-o-Y basis circle wise, for the period April-September based on the TRAI report. The data also compares the circle wise BSNL growth vis-à-vis the industry growth during this period and calculate the gaps between the two.




  1. The Annexure-3 analyses the growth of the revenue on the Y-o-Y basis circle wise, for the period April-December based on the TRAI report. The data compares the circle wise BSNL’s revenue growth earned by basic & Mobile Services.




  1. The key findings of the analysis are:



    1. Total Revenue (Annexure-1):




      1. BSNL revenue for the Third quarter (Q3 2012-13) stood at Rs 6,239 Cr against industry revenue of Rs. 52,858 Cr with market share of 11.80%, lagging behind Airtel (28.66%), Vodafone (19.08%) and Idea ((12.28%).




      1. The industry revenue on Q-o-Q (Q2 of 2012-13 to Q3 of 2012-13) basis has declined by 0.15% against which BSNL revenue decline by 11.39%.




      1. The industry revenue on Y-o-Y basis for the period (April – December) has grown from Rs. 1,44,937 Cr to Rs 1,58,281 Cr, an increase of 9.21%. During the same period, BSNL revenue has decreased from Rs 22,725 Cr to Rs 20,424 Cr, showing a decline of 10.13%. This indicates a gap of 19.34% between growth of BSNL and growth of industry.


4.2 Zonal wise, Circle Wise Revenue Growth of Industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL (Annexure-2):
4.2.1 Zonal Analysis:

  1. South Zone is the largest contributor to the total revenue having share of (33.4%) followed by North Zone (27.1%), West Zone (21.6%) and East Zone (17.9%).

  2. The growth of industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL on Y-o-Y basis (for the period April – December) in the four zones along with gap in growth rate of BSNL and industry (in the increasing order of gap) is given below :



4.2.2 Analysis of South Zone:

  1. Top three Circles in terms of Weight age: The top three Circles in order of contribution to revenue are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.




  1. The License area wise growth of the industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL on Y-o-Y basis (for the period April – Dec.) in the License areas of South zone along with gap in growth rate of BSNL and industry (in the increasing order of gap) is given below :




  1. Andhra Pradesh circle is the only circle in south zone which has registered a positive growth in Gross revenue on Y-o-Y basis.




  1. The top three Circles registering highest growth (Y-o-Y) for the industry is: Chennai (14.7%), Tamilnadu (10.0%) and Karnataka (8.6%). Comparatively, the growth of BSNL in these circles are Chennai (-3.3%), and Tamilnadu (-1.3%) Karnataka (-6.2%).



      1. Analysis of West Zone:

  1. Top three Circles in terms of Weight age: The top three Circles in order of contribution to revenue are Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.




  1. The License area wise growth of the industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL on Y-o-Y basis (for the period April – Dec.) in the License areas of West zone along with gap in growth rate of BSNL and industry (in the increasing order of gap) is given below :




  1. The top three Circles registering highest growth (Y-o-Y) for the industry is: Maharashtra (9.4%), Madhya Pradesh (9.4%), and Gujarat (5.8%). Comparatively, the growth of BSNL in these circles are Maharashtra (-6.7%), Madhya Pradesh (-0.7%), and Gujarat (-9.4%).




      1. Analysis of East Zone:




  1. Top three Circles in terms of Weight age: The top three Circles in order of contribution to revenue are Bihar, West Bengal and Kolkata.




  1. The License area wise growth of the industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL on Y-o-Y basis (for the period April – Sep.) in the License areas of East zone along with gap in growth rate of BSNL and industry (in the increasing order of gap) is given below :




  1. Orissa circle is the only circle in East zone which has registered a positive growth in Gross revenue on Y-o-Y basis.




  1. The top three Circles registering highest growth (Y-o-Y) for the industry is: Bihar (11.9%), North East (10.1%) and Orissa (9.9%). Comparatively, the growth of BSNL in these circles is Bihar (-3.8%), North East (-11.7%) and Orissa (0.3%).




      1. .Analysis of North Zone:




  1. Top three Circles in terms of Weight age: The top three Circles in order of contribution to revenue are UP (East), Rajasthan and UP (West).




  1. The License area wise growth of the industry vis-à-vis growth of BSNL on Y-o-Y basis (for the period April – Dec.) in the License areas of North zones along with gap in growth rate of BSNL and industry (in the increasing order of gap) is given below :




  1. Haryana circle is the only circle in North zone which has registered a positive growth in Gross revenue on Y-o-Y basis.




  1. The top three Circles registering highest growth (Y-o-Y) for the industry is: Rajasthan (12.7%), Haryana (9.9%) and UP (East) (9.5%). Comparatively, the growth of BSNL in these circles are Rajasthan (-4.9%), Haryana (4.3%) and UP (East) (-17.9%).




    1. Analysis of BSNL’s Revenue growth in Basic and Mobile liscence, the details are given in Annexure 3. The salient points are:




  1. The revenue from BSNL’s Basic license on Y-o-Y basis ( 2011-12 vs 2012-13) for the period April – December has declined from 6,191 crore to 5,181 crore, showing a decline of 16.31% . In the same way revenue from BSNL’s Mobile license on Y-o-Y basis ( 2011-12 vs 2012-13) for the period April – December has increased from 7,095 crore to 7,195 crore, making a growth of 1.41%.




  1. In the Mobile services, South zone is the largest contributor of the revenue has registered a positive growth of 9.54% on Y-0-Y basis (2011-12 vs 2012-13) for the period April – December.




  1. In the Basic services, all four zones has registered a negative growth rate on Y-0-Y basis (2011-12 vs 2012-13) for the period April – December with North zone (-22.13%), South zone ( -18.09%), East zone (-10.49%) and West zone ( -10.31%).
