Week 10
SUBJECT:
FISHERY Topic:
ARTIFICIAL BREEDING This is the artificial mating of male and female fish under controlled environment. It can also be defined as the manipulation of sexually matured fish to spawn (reproduce).
FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SUCCESSFUL ARTIFICIAL BREEDING ▪ Water quality.
▪ Light penetration.
▪ Weather.
▪ Temperature.
▪ Biological status.
Water Quality: Water quality required in both natural and artificial breeding is pure and fresh. An underground tube well water (borehole) containing iron is considered favourable for artificial breeding of fish.
Big lakes, swamps are used for breeding and hatchery.
Light Penetration: Light has
a great impact on the growth, maturity and sexual excitement of fish. The fish grows and gains maturity fast when light reflection is less and gain maturity slowly due to long term reflection.
Temperature: Temperature has special impact in the growth and maturity of fish and influences breeding and hatching of eggs.
