Year 1 maths – Tell time to the half-hour

Australian curriculum Learning objectives

  • ACMMG0201 Reading time on analogue and digital clocks and observing the characteristics of half-hour times.

Resources required

  • Scootle animations – School day analogue; School day digital; and Time tools. Animations from Scootle are available to all Australian teachers via password. Find out more about registering with Scootle.4 Once registered and logged in, search for animations by name.

  • Worksheet 1: Time for Sunshine5

  • Paper plates

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Split pins

Lesson outcome: Students practise reading and telling the time in an interactive fashion.

Lesson outline:

  1. Teacher displays images on interactive whiteboard/display board of a number of different clocks, both analogue and digital – such as microwave clocks, buildings, watches, on mobile phones, the computer. Students discuss what they know about clocks and time.

  2. Review the importance of the little hand and big hand on an analogue clock.

  3. Students use paper plates to make a clock, and copy an analogue clock to write all the numbers in place, and make hands out of pipe cleaners etc - one long hand and one short hand.

  4. Reintroduce telling the time by the hour with students viewing Telling time with Clark the Elephant video clip. Discussion follows about measuring time by hour and then by half hour.

  5. Teacher uses the interactive whiteboard/board to display an analogue clock and a digital clock. Students come out the front and write times, as suggested by teacher, in hour and half hours units on both clocks.

  6. Digital and analogue versions are reinforced by the viewing of Hip hop around the clock video clip.

  7. Class plays ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’.

  8. Either in small groups with iPads or computers, or as a whole class, students interact with the following Scootle animations - School Day Analogue and School Day Digital, to reinforce their learning.

  9. Students practise and apply their learning using Worksheet 1 and can use their paper plate clock as an additional resource to assist, if desired.

Homework/extension

Students interact with Time Tools Animation, which reinforces ‘twelve hours to the half hour – providing students opportunities to interact and practice, play time challenge and time matches.
