Civil War and Reconstruction Study Guide
Terms:
Minie ball- a new conical bullet with a hollow base that expanded when fired, used in the war. Could be reloaded up to 8 times faster and could be fired up to 600yds.
Amputations- when the limb can’t be saved due to bad injuries, then it has to be removed, a skilled doctor
could remove an entire limb in about 10 minutes.
Gangrene- death of soft tissue due to obstructed circulation, usually followed by decomposition and putrefaction.
Confederate- Grey uniforms, fought for state rights, and under the command of General Robert E. Lee. South believed that slavery was good.
Union- North and against slavery. Blue uniforms and won the war.
Telegraph-America’s first source of mass communication, needed only seconds to send messages. Union was the main user, and the South couldn’t work it as well.
Sharecropper- Farms the landowner’s land for a portion of the crops, a house, and some land to live on.
Tenant Farmer -pays the landowner money for rent to have a house, some land, and be able to farm on the land.
Bromine- Was a chemical that minimized death when amputations were performed, and reduces gangrene.
People:
Abraham Lincoln- president of the United States,, and was killed.Wanted the 13th Amendment and gave the Emancipation Proclamation.
Gen. Robert E. Lee- Leader of the Confederate Army and fought with Gen. Sherman
Gen. Burnside- His last name and sideburns led to the invention of the word, sideburns, he captured Burnside’s Bridge at Antietam, he had a defeat at Fredericksburg by Lee’s smaller Confederate army.
Gen. William Sherman- Sherman’s march to the sea, he wiped out Atlanta, South Carolina, and eventually captured the Confederate Army at Appomattox had the tactic of total war and his troops made Sherman’s Bowties with the Confederate railroads.
Pres. Johnson- He didn’t believe that blacks needed rights, so he ended up being impeached.
Events and Things to Know:
Emancipation Proclamation- signed by Lincoln, it said that all slaves would be forever and always be free in any state.
Burnside Expedition- was a series of engagements fought along the North Carolina Coast between February and June 1862. The expedition was part of Winfield Scott’s overall Anaconda Plan, which aimed at closing blockade-running ports inside the Outer Banks. The amphibious operation was carried out primarily by New England troops under Brig. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside and assisted by the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron under Captain Louis M. Goldsborough.
13th Amendment- It outlaws slavery.
14th Amendment- an amendment to the U.S. constitution, ratified in 1868, defining national citizenship and forbidding the states to restrict the basic rights of citizens or other persons.

15th Amendment- Prohibits the government from denying a person’s right to vote on the basis of race.
Plans for Reconstruction- It was their belief that the nation could be best served by leaving the brutality of the Civil War behind quickly. 10% Plan (Lincoln): Once ten percent of a southern state's 1860 voters had taken an oath of loyalty, the state could rejoin the Union. Eventually, the dispute would lead to an attempt to impeach and remove President Johnson. Although the official reason for the impeachment of Johnson was his violation of the Tenure of Office Act, the underlying reason was Congress' disagreement with Johnson over Reconstruction.( radical reconstruction- a more strict form of reconstruction. Abolish slavery, give blacks rights, bring together the states.)
North’s Advantages- manufacturing capability, the North had already had an industrial revolution and had the ability to produce better weapons and more weapons.
States that Succeeded- The 13 southern states. (Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina ).
Border States- Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri.
What made Civil War diff/ set it apart?- The Civil War was the first modern war because it took place after the industrial revolution. One Nation fight each other.
Which battle turned the tide of the war? Gettysburg Address.
Invention that called for public opinion to support war? The invention of cameras.
