OTTMAN CHAPTERS 8 & 9




  1. Be able to provide the intervals which are used in the construction of the various augmented sixth chords (It., Fr., Gr.).

  2. Know the relationship of the bass note of an augmented sixth chord to its tonic key.

  3. Given that the augmented sixth chords are spelled the same in parallel M/m keys, be able to list which major keys have no parallel minor key, and which minor keys have no parallel major key.

  4. In regard to augmented sixth chords, be familiar with the chord of resolution, and the intermediary chord often used in the resolution of the Gr6 chord, and why.

  5. Be able to describe the resolution of the two intervals which comprise the augmented sixth.

  6. Know what chord factor is doubled in the three-note augmented sixth chord.

  7. Be familiar with the alternate spelling of the Gr6 chord in major.

  8. Be able to describe why the Gr6 is useful as a pivot in modulation, and be able to spell it as the other-type chord.

  9. Be able to describe the results of modulation in terms of direction and interval regarding the three modulation formulas (V7 = Gr6, V7/V = Gr6, Gr6 = V7).

  10. There will also be several part-writing examples involving augmented sixth chords, some involving modulation. You will be asked to do part writing and provide Roman numeral analysis symbols.
