The City of Atlantis

24.09.13, Carmen van Klaveren

The legendary city of Atlantis is represented as a beautiful landmark gracefully immersed in the sea. It has been the subject of dreams, fictional stories, and various discussions of its own existence.
Atlantis was first mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato in his two dialogues Timaeus and Citias as a naval power. It is clear that Plato had created Atlantis as a plot device for his stories because there is no other recorded mention of Atlantis from that time. However, Plato’s creation has been the topic of many discussions and investigations looking to prove its existence.
It is said that Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune." This is why Atlantis’ location has been speculated to be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Mediterranean Sea, in the North Sea, near India and in many other places where no trace of Atlantis has ever been found.
Even though Plato described Atlantis mainly as a military threat, in more modern times, the city is regarded as a utopia, with a fascinating culture and architecture, which was supposedly related to the Mayans and the Aztec. Other speculations tell that the people from Atlantis were Nordic, originating from the North Pole. Nevertheless, the submerged city is seen as culturally heroic, as well as the beginning of all ancient civilizations.
Various myths have risen since the creation of Atlantis, such as the “Hall of Records” under the Egyptian Sphinx, which supposedly holds historical texts of Atlantis and the revival of the city in the 1960s. Of course these legends have never been proven to be true.
Even though Atlantis might not have a recognized existence, the city has inspired many philosophers, scientists and of course, little children, ever since the Disney movie Atlantis: the Lost Empire was released.
