The Hanover Hawk Marching Invitational welcomes the following highly qualified adjudicators to judge our

ninth annual competition:

Kyle A. Flohre (Visuals)

Mr. Flohre is currently the Director of Bands at Colonial Heights High School. He received his Bachelor of Music from James Madison University and is currently pursuing his Master of Music Education at Virginia Commonwealth University.


Under the direction of Mr. Flohre, the ensembles at Colonial Heights High School have consistently received superior ratings at Marching and Concert Assessments. Colonial Heights High School is a fourteen time “Virginia Honor Band,” with ten of those coming under Mr. Flohre’s tenure. The Colonial Heights Band Program consists of the following ensembles: The Marching Colonials, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Percussion Ensemble. The program also supports a very successful winter guard. The Concept Winter Guard has received numerous awards, in various classifications, while participating in the AIA circuit. In 2008, Mr. Flohre was recognized by his peers and received the Colonial Heights High School “Teacher of the Year” award.
Mr. Flohre’s professional affiliations include: NAfME, VMEA, VBODA, and Kappa Kappa Psi. He served as the District III VBODA representative and was recently inducted into the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster’s Fraternity. He is also an instructor at JMU Summer Band Camps, and plays clarinet in the Commonwealth Winds. Mr. Flohre and his wife Jennifer recently expanded their family with the birth of their first child – Emma.
Boyce “Barry” Flowe (Drum Major)

Mr. Flowe is in his second year as the Performing Arts Lead Teacher Specialist for Hanover County Public Schools. Before assuming this role, he served for nine years as the director of bands at Oak Knoll Middle School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Prior to Oak Knoll, he spent eleven years as the director of bands at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia. In both venues, the bands continually received Superior ratings at State Festivals and his program at Patrick Henry was recognized as a Virginia Honor Band under his leadership.

 

A sought-after guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, Mr. Flowe is also in his eleventh year as the director of the Pep Band at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Mr. Flowe coordinated the Kings Dominion Band and Orchestra Festival from 1993-2012.



 

Mr. Flowe obtained a Bachelors degree in music from Old Dominion University and a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Virginia Music Educators Association and Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association. Mr. Flowe lives in Henrico County with his wife Nancy and their two children.


Merry Beth Hall (Auxiliary)

Ms. Hall is a colorguard choreographer and instructor from Hanover County, Virginia. She currently works with Glen Allen High School, Prince George High School, and Hanover High School. Past experience includes several other groups in the Richmond metropolitan area. Ms. Hall holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University and Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is co-principal horn with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra and is a member of the Beltway Brass Quintet in Washington, DC. Her full-time work is in the field of curriculum development for career and technical education.


George F. Sadler (Visuals)

Mr. Sadler was an instrumental music director and administrator in the Hanover County Public School system for thirty-two years. He is a graduate of John Randolph Tucker High School in Henrico County and received his B.S. in Music Education from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. In 2003, he received a Master of Education Degree from the University of Virginia with an emphasis in School Administration and Supervision.


Mr. Sadler’s career as a band director spanned three decades and has been highlighted by several Virginia State Honor Band awards. While at Atlee High School, his band was awarded a special citation from the Virginia General Assembly for outstanding contributions to the State of Virginia. Mr. Sadler’s bands have performed in major bowl game appearances, the Orange Bowl Festival Parade and in festivals throughout the east coast. He also serves as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the state. Mr. Sadler’s professional affiliations have included membership in the Music Educators’ National Conference, Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, and Phi Beta Mu. In 2012, Mr. Sadler retired from his position as Principal of Hanover High School in Hanover County, Virginia.
Earl E. Shaffer, Jr. (Music)

Mr. Shaffer is in his 34th year as a teacher of public school music. An Arlington, Virginia native, he graduated from Yorktown High School in 1975, attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduated from James Madison University in 1980 with a Bachelors of Music in Education degree. He was the director of the Covington (Va.) High School Band for nine years prior to moving to Chesterfield County in August 1989 where he began a seventeen-year tenure as the director of bands at Lloyd C. Bird High School. He was appointed to open the new Cosby High School in August 2006.


In 2013, Mr. Shaffer’s band have currently earned SUPERIOR ratings at the past 24 consecutive VBODA concert festivals, one of the longest streaks of its kind amongst current and retired directors in the Commonwealth. Mr. Shaffer’s bands have also earned Commonwealth of Virginia Honor Band titles for fifteen years, making him the 12th director in the history of the VBODA to have his bands earn this number of titles.

Mr. Shaffer is an active adjudicator for band festivals in the mid-Atlantic region and is a sought-after guest conductor and clinician of bands.



Away from teaching, Mr. Shaffer is an avid N-Scale and O-Gauge model railroad operator and collector, a longtime “World’s Greatest Hobby Ambassador” (WGH) which is a national organization designed to promote model railroading, a pilot of radio controlled aircraft, a Washington Redskins and a Washington Nationals fan, is a clarinetist who has recorded with the nationally known Keystone Wind Ensemble of Indiana, Pennsylvania and who currently performs with the Commonwealth Winds of Richmond Virginia, and plays softball for the “Ambassadors” in the Chesterfield County “50 and over” league. He and his wife Ellen live in Chesterfield and have 3 grown children.
