The purchase of a group of Tetravaal's scouting country armour-plated assault robots was prompted by an increase in crime in Johannesburg, South Africa. Deon Wilson, a British scientist, developed these robots mainly to replace the overworked human police force. The remote-controlled robot, MOOSE, designed by Vincent Moore an Australian veteran army, is a rival inside the business. Deon is congratulated on Tetravaal's achievement, but Vincent is irritated when the authorities refuse to offer him the same treatment.

Deon develops a prototype artificial intelligence that can feel emotions and form ideas at home., but Tetravaal CEO Michelle Bradley refuses to let him test the A.I. on a police robot. Deon is unfazed, and he steals a broken robot before it is scrapped, as well as the "guard key" needed to upgrade the robot's software and stashes it in his van. Members of the gang, Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika, kidnap him on his way home. When he protests that Tetravaal's police robots lack remote controls, they instruct him that he must rebuild the robot. The robot powers up with childish character after Deon changes its software. Deon and Yolandi train the robot to speak and give it the name "Chappie." Ninja's group has a few days to pay Hippo 20 million. Ninja wants to teach Chappie how to be a gangster by abandoning him in a hazardous neighbourhood. He is pursued by Vincent that intends to disable all Tetravaal scouts excluding MOOSE. Vincent obtains the guard key and utilize it for his purposes which is to install a virus at Tetravaal, undermining and paralyzing all scouts, including Chappie. The streets of Johannesburg are soon overrun by gangsters, so Deon takes Chappie to the Tetravaal facility to be fixed.

Chappie is used by Ninja's team to heist an armoured automobile, which is seen on television, forcing Tetravaal to chase him. Chappie discovers that Ninja's plot to give him new body was fake and plan to kill Ninja for lying. Deon arrives to inform them that Michelle Bradley has ordered Chappie to be destroyed. Vincent launches the MOOSE robot, which he controls remotely to kill Deon and Chappie, while Hippo comes to collect his money. Yolandi sacrifices herself to save Ninja, while Chappie eliminates MOOSE by exploding a bomb as he is about to be killed. Chappie were angry when Yolandi's dead and takes Deon to the facility, where he brutally beats Vincent to death. Chappie then use the modified MOOSE helmet to transfer Deon's mind to a spare robot. In exchange, Chappie's consciousness is wirelessly transferred into nearby paralyzed scouts. Deon and Chappie flee when Tetravaal's contract with the police is ended.

While burning Yolandi's belongings, Ninja saw a box with a doll replica and a flash drive labeled "Mommy's Consciousness Test Backu". Chappie hack into Tetravaal's factory, makes a robot that looks like Yolandi with the contents of the flash drive.
