OPERATIONAL NOTES
The SS-N-6 was the first "modern" strategic SLBM deployed in Soviet submarines.
In October 1986, an SS-N-6 exploded on board a Yankee-class SSBN near Bermuda. The submarine sank or was scuttled three days after the explosion when salvage attempts failed. The accident underscored the danger of using liquid propellant in SLBMs, a risk Soviet SLBM designers accepted in order to achieve greater range and throwweight than their solid-fuel technology at the time could provide.
