Unit II Terms and Names

I. Great Plains: the vast grassland that extends through the central portion North America, from Texas northward to Canada, east of the Rocky Mountains





  1. Treaty of Fort Laramie: the treaty requiring the Sioux to live on a reservation along the Missouri River ·


  1. Assimilation: a minority group's adoption of the beliefs and way of life of the dominant culture

4., Dawes Act: a law, enacted in 1887, that was intended to "Americanize" Native Americans by distributing reservation land to individual owners




  1. Battle of Wounded Knee: the massacre by U.S. soldiers of300 unarmed Native Americans at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, in 1890




  1. Longhorn: a breed of sturdy, long-homed cattle brought by the Spanish to Mexico and suited to the dry conditions of the Southwest ,



  1. Chisholm Trail: the major cattle route from San Antonio, Texas,through Oklahoma to Kansas ,



  1. Long drive: the moving of cattle over trails to a shipping center




  1. Homestead Act: a U.S. law enacted in 1862 that provided 160 acres in the West to any citizen who was head of household and would cultivate the land for 5 years

  1. Munn v. Illinois: an 1877 case in which the Supreme Court upheld states' regulation of railroads for the benefit of farmers and consumers, thus establishing the right of government to regulate private industry to serve the public interest




  1. Interstate Commerce Act: a law, enacted in 1887, that reestablished the federal government's right to supervise railroad activities and created a five-member Interstate Commerce Commiss1on to do so




  1. Vertical integration: a company's taking over its suppliers and distributers and transportation systems to gain total control over the quality and costs of its product




  1. Horizontal integration: the merging of companies that make similar products




  1. Social Darwinism: an economic and social philosophy- supposedly based on the biologist Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection- holding that a system of unrestrained competition will ensure the survival of the fittest




  1. Sherman Antitrust Act: a law, enacted in 1890, that was intended to prevent monopolies by making it illegal to establish trusts that interfered with free trade




  1. American Federation of Labor (AFL) -an alliance oftr de and craft unions, formed in 1886




  1. Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)- a labor organization for unskilled workers, formed by a group of radical unionists and socialists in 1905
