A RESOLUTION recognizing and commending the appointments of William Stamps Farish as United States Ambassador to Great Britain and W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr. as United States Ambassador to the Republic of Austria.

WHEREAS, it is with utmost pride and honor that this Senate recognize and commend two distinguished Americans who possess strong ties to the Commonwealth of Kentucky that have recently been appointed Ambassadors to Great Britain and to the Republic of Austria; and

WHEREAS, William Stamps Farish was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Court of St. James on July 11, 2001, being invested with full power to conduct business while representing the United States of America; his credentials are impeccable, and he is held in high esteem by his peers; success in the financial and thoroughbred industries, his tenure as director and chairman of the board of Churchill Downs and his position on the board of directors of Keeneland, along with philanthropic funding of many charitable causes, have made him widely acclaimed and highly honored, and his interest and participation in politics and many global experiences have prepared him for this most prominent post in Great Britain; and

WHEREAS, W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Austria on December 5, 2001, being invested with full power to conduct business while representing the United States of America; he takes with him extensive knowledge of international commerce and commitment to free trade; he has pledged to promote democracy and human rights in Europe, and to ensure that America's voice is heard on biotechnology, telecommunications, and pharmaceutical market access; a highly successful businessman and chief executive officer of Brown-Forman for twenty years, and his membership on the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations during three American presidencies, further qualifies him for this most honorable position; and his lifetime cultural and philanthropic responsibilities have played an integral role in preparing him for this most eminent post of United States Ambassador to the Republic of Austria;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This Senate is indeed proud and honored to recognize and congratulate William Stamps Farish upon his appointment as United States Ambassador to Great Britain and W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., upon his appointment as United States Ambassador to the Republic of Austria. We wish to them success in all future international endeavors.

Section 2. With the appointments of William Stamps Farish and W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., the United States of America will be represented by two individuals whose integrity is beyond reproach, and whose duties will be lasting contributions to world peace and prosperity.

Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Ambassador William Stamps Farish and Ambassador W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr.

Section 4. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to H. E. Ambassador William Stamps Farish, United States Embassy, 24 Grosvenor Square, London W1A1AE; and to H. E. Ambassador W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., Boltzmanngasse 16, A-1090 Vienna, Austria.
