Change blindness is more of a psychological factor just as it is a visual factor. The ability of an individual to detect visual change depends largely on their cognitive abilities (Johansson et al., 2008). Experiments found out that change blindness subsequently results in choice blindness (Johansson et al., 2008). This means that if the choices an individual makes are determined by visual stimuli, the quality of the choices will be dependent on the cognitive abilities of the individual. In fact, psychologists term change blindness as an individual’s habit of failing to notice changes in the surrounding visual environment (Cherry, 2019).
Case Scenario of Change Blindness. When buying or generally acquiring a house, an individual may have to compare between the various options available. This comparison involve analyzing photographs of different apartments to identify which is the best fit. Going by visual and psychological experiments such that of Johansson et al. (2008), a person wishing to make a decision on the best house may fail to make the right choice because of change blindness that results in the inability of the individual to identify minute differences between the houses in question. The situation gets worse if the individual has to travel to different places to visually inspect potential houses. The experiments by Johansson et al. (2008), proved that change blindness was more prevalent when there were longer periods of distraction.
Coping with Change blindness. In a situation where one feels susceptible to change blindness, It would be a wise choice to use some influence from friends, family or peers from work. Experiments found out that, in scenarios where some people did not recognize visual changes, there were those who were able to notice all the changes (Johansson et al., 2008). Therefore, where more people are involved, there is a lesser chance for change blindness.
