Characteristics of Sovereignty

  1. Absoluteness: this simply means that the powers of a sovereign state cannot be subject to any restriction or limitation. In other words, the sovereignty of a state is supreme and unlimited

  2. Indivisibility. This implies that the supreme power of a state cannot be shared or divided but such powers can be delegated between two levels of government as found in a federation or federal structure.

  3. Permanence: This means that sovereignty is permanent, continuous and uninterrupted as long as the state exists. Though government and its officials in a state may change sovereignty continues as long as the state exists.

  4. Comprehensiveness: This simply means that the power exercised by a sovereign state are wide in scope and its actions or decisions are binding on all persons and associations operating within the territorial jurisdiction of the state.

  5. Absence of Foreign Control: This implies that a sovereign state irrespective of its status, size of territory, population or military might is free from the dictates or interferences of foreign body.
