FIRST TERM SS1 GOVERNMENT

SCHEME OF WORK

WEEK ONE

TOPIC: DEFINITION OF THE SUBJECT MATTER: GOVERNMENT

Learning objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to;

  1. Define Government as an institution (machinery or agents) of the state

  2. Define Government as a process or art of governing

  3. Define Government as an academic field of study

  4. State the meaning and features of a state, and the differences between state and government and the relationship between state and government.

The term "Government" is ambiguous. This ambiguity lies in the fact that government has no one universally or generally acceptable definition. In simple language, the meaning or definition given to it depends essentially on the angle from which one is looking at it. Thus, government can be defined in three different ways:

Government as an institution machinery or agents of the state

Government as a processor an art of governing

Government as an academic field or subject of study.
