Functions of Government Law Making: Government through its established agency or organ i.e, the legislature makes laws to regulate the actions of the people of the state in order to ensure peace and stability.
Maintenance of Law and Order: It is the duty of government to maintain peace, law and order in the state. Government exercises this function through its law enforcement agents like the police and other bodies created by the law of the state.
Defence and Security: Government protects and defends the territorial integrity of the state against any external attack or aggression by making use of the armed forces of the state.
Provision of Employment: Government as the largest employer of labour provides employment for a large number of the citizens in its various ministries and parastatals.
Maintaining External Relations: Government also maintains good external relations with other friendly countries in such areas like economic, political and cultural.
Administration of Justice: The government through the judicial organ administers justice and mediates in conflicts arising from the social relations of the people within a state. For instance, prisons are established and maintained for the punishments of offenders and criminals.
Economic Development: It is also the duty of government to provide conducive environment for the productive economic engagement of the people within the state.
