Secondary Notification

Under Section 65 of the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act, 1989 (Commonwealth), a secondary notification of sodium cyanide may be required where a manufacturer or introducer of the chemical becomes aware of circumstances that may warrant a reassessment of its environmental hazards and risks. Specific circumstances include:

  1. the method of manufacture of sodium cyanide in Australia has changed, or is likely to change, in a way that may result in an increased risk of adverse environmental effects;

  2. the method of use of sodium cyanide in the mining industry in Australia has changed, or is likely to change, in a way that may result in an increased risk of adverse environmental effects; and

  3. additional information has become available to the manufacturers, importers and applicants of the assessment of sodium cyanide as to the adverse environmental effects of the chemical, including wildlife mortality incidents at WAD CN concentrations below 50 mg/L.

The Director must be notified within 28 days of the manufacturer/importer becoming aware of any of the above or other circumstances prescribed under Section 65 of the Act.
