Product Composition of the African-Asian Merchandise TradeStructureTable 2.2 presents the product group-destination matrix of Africa’s merchandise exports. The composition of exports is broadly based both for exports to the EU
and for intra-African markets, whereas the exports to the United States and Asia are more concentrated in natural resources.
Africa’s exports to Asia consist mainly of primary commodities, including oil, non-oil minerals, metals,
and agricultural raw materials, accounting for 86 percent of exports to Asia. Approximately 47 percent of Africa’s exports to Asia comprise oil and natural gas, which represent 12 percent of
