Looking Ahead – 10 Year Timeline

There are many questions we can ask of the many cultural resources on the Hoosier. There are gaps in the archaeological record that will be filled as we focus those research efforts. The new Heritage Program Managed to Standard target forces us to account for the activities we accomplish related to cultural resource management outside of traditional Section 106 project-driven work. It also enables us to focus funding for those projects that best meet the seven elements. Our overall point scores will vary as funding and partnerships increase or decrease as we strive to meet the target in the years to come.

Project List

  • Concentrated work with Law Enforcement-patrols, ATV trails at Hemlock Cliffs, follow up on past ARPA investigations.

  • Use social media to reach the public i.e. Facebook, Twitter.

  • Capitalize on the reach of our two National Scenic Byways. Develop auto tours for both byways to highlight the local history for visitors.

  • Get creative about marketing the Hoosier to visitors. Consider offering events such as a guided tour (automobile/motorcycle) of the Ohio River Scenic Byway-maybe across the southern tier forests.

  • Record and distribute YouTube videos and podcasts.

  • Explore opportunities for cooperative projects with the southern tier forests to work at a landscape level.

  • Seek ways to continue research on the Underground Railroad.

  • Create lobby exhibits for both the Tell City and Brownstown District/Supervisor’s Offices.

  • Use Brooks Cabin to expand education and interpretive opportunities for the northern part of the Forest.

  • Develop conservation education programs related to heritage using historic photographs, artifacts etc.

  • Provide open houses and opportunities for employees to assist field projects.

  • Promote utilization of the Rickenbaugh House as a program venue.

  • Continue to use the implementation spreadsheet to ensure sites are being protected during project implementation.

  • Help develop an interpretive plan framework to focus attention on key messages and promote high quality and consistency of our products.

  • Develop consultation protocols with Native American Tribes.

  • Verify accuracy of INFRA site and survey data.

  • Prioritize Section 110 surveys using the predictive model currently in development.

  • Prioritize sites for formal evaluations based on current historic context documents and partner interest.

  • Evaluate Paw Paw Marsh site.

  • Develop interpretive material for Waldrip Cabin, Buffalo Trace, and Carnes Mill.

  • Continue invasive species eradication at Rockhouse Hollow Rockshelters.

  • Finish second floor cleaning of Rickenbaugh House to interpret construction methods (not rehabilitated).

  • Nominate German Ridge CCC Campground to the NRHP.

  • Evaluate and interpret Hindostan Quarry.

  • Attempt to repatriate culturally unidentified human remains.

  • Maintain or improve existing interpretive products.

  • Participate in Indiana Archaeology Month (September).

  • Continue to seek out University students who can focus research on the resources we manage for academic theses and dissertations.

  • Maintain existing partnerships with universities, federal, state, and private organizations.

  • Seek out new partnerships.

The following tables show the projects and activities (by fiscal year) that have been identified for completion in the next 10 years. This is meant to be a flexible so that the above identified projects, as well as others, can be inserted when appropriate.
