Cultural Resource Survey and Site Synthesis

This section provides a synthesis of known and projected cultural resource sites on the Hoosier.

The Hoosier National Forest is 220,000 acres in size. A total of 123,362 acres have been surveyed, 90% to a complete level. About 12,000 acres are surveyed to a cursory level only and it is likely additional cultural resource sites will be found there.

According to INFRA, our corporate database, there are 2,929 sites reported on both NFS and non-federal land within the proclamation boundaries of the Hoosier and up to one mile beyond. Site records for these non-federal properties are maintained as it is possible for them to become NFS lands as Forest consolidation continues. With 123,362 acres surveyed and 2,048 sites recorded on NFS land, site density is 1:60. If site density is consistent with the remaining acreage, we can expect another 1,611 sites will be discovered in the future.

Ten sites are eligible or are listed on the NRHP and six are potentially eligible to the NRHP. Nearly half of the sites have not been formally evaluated to determine significance according to the NRHP criteria. Thirty percent of all sites are historic homestead/farmsteads primarily 19th and 20th century. Rockshelters are the second most frequent site type at 23%, and prehistoric open air sites at 20%. Smaller numbers of a variety of site types exist and include schools, mines, and cemeteries.

The table below lists site types and frequencies on the Hoosier.
