Important Places in South Tipperary

Important Places

There are sites of historic/archaeological/architectural/environmental interest located in or near the main towns, as well as at Holycross, Lorrha, Ashley Park, Rearcross. The river Shannon and its largest lake, Lough Derg, forms the scenic western boundary of Tipperary North.

There is widespread evidence of the 13th century Norman throughout Tipperary North, by way of numerous mottes, several Hall Houses and religious foundations, and fine castle remains in Nenagh and Roscrea.

Emigration from County Tipperary North

Emigration from Tipperary North was constant before the Great Famine of 1845 - 50, albeit in small numbers as opposed to the immediate post-Famine period. Substantial numbers were transported to Australia.

South Tipperary

Important Places in South Tipperary

The world famous 'Rock of Cashel' with its historic ruins is a major attraction near the town of Cashel. Also of interest to the visitor are the towns of Cashel, Cahir and Tipperary Town.

The Great Famine and Emigration from County Tipperary South

In the period before the Great Famine, emigration from this area chiefly consisted of Protestants who settled in Canada. During the Great Famine people emigrated from Workhouses in this area to Australia. Relief Committees were active in Tipperary during the Great Famine period and saved many from starvation. But many perished too from hunger and disease in the infamous workhouses or on the roadside. Mass emigration from Tipperary began during the Great Famine and people scattered all over the world. Mostly, however, people from South Tipperary settled in Australia.

Rosegreen and Whitechurch in County Tipperary and where many Anglim ancestors are buried. The two villages are "close to the borders of Cork and Limerick, which confirms the Cork origin of

the name and ties with (the Anglim ancestors) in Limerick (John J. Anglim). Rosegreen is near Clonmel. Thomas is considered a key member of the family who still lives there.
