Notes on the Rosegreen Anglims Sentenced to Marriage !, in, Freeman’s Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin, Ireland), Jul. 19, 1872. In the Record Court at the Clonmel assizes yesterday, the following case was heard by Mr. Clarke – Anglim v. O’Brien – this was an action on title to recover a portion of the lands of Rosegreens. The lands are held under a lease bearing the date the 23rd February, 1843, executed by Mr. Newham to William Anglim, the father of the plaintiff Patrick, and grandfather of the Plaintiff William. The plaintiffs claimed the land under the title of an original lease, which demised them to the plaintiff Patrick, and grandfather of the plaintiff William. The plaintiff Patrick, and through plaintiff William, as the eldest son and heir-at-law of Matthew Anglim, deceased, who was the eldest son of the leasee. The defendant claimed the land under the will of a sister, A Rebecca Anglim, who was the widow of John Anglim, fourth son of the leasee, William. The case was at hearing on Wednesday and portion of yesterday, but it was brought to the sudden agreeable termination by Mr. Clarke, the presiding judge pro tem. While the defendant, a well looking young woman, was under cross-examination, the plaintiff was ordered up to confront her with reference to a portion of her testimony. Mr. Clarke, at this stage of the proceedings, whispered the jury; Mr. Hemphil inquired the cause of it. Mr. Clarke – it just strikes me that there is a pleasant and an easy way to terminate this lawsuit. The plaintiff appears to be a respectable young man, and this is very nice young woman (laughter). They can both get married and live happy on this farm. If they go on with law proceedings it will be all fittered away between the lawyers the lawyers who, I am sure, are not ungallant enough to wish the marriage may not come. The young lady on being interrogated blushed and stated she was quite willing to marry the plaintiff. Mr., Clarke (to the latter) – Will you marry this young woman? Plaintiff – Most undoubtedly (great laughter). Mr. Clarke – It is odd this course was not before adopted. The suggestion came to by instinct on seeing the young couple together (laughter). Mr. Gibson said the marriage should take place at once. Mr. Hackett –Give him a long day, my lord. (laughter). Mr. Gibson – The young lady is very anxious for the marriage. Mr. Hemphil – Yes, but the weather is very hot at present – say September next (renewed laughter). If the plaintiff breaks his promise a good action for breach of promise will lie against him. It is a great pity Archdeacon Quirke is not here, the matter could be settled at once. (The Archdeacon was mentioned as one of the parties present at the making of one of the disputed wills). A verdict was subsequently entered for plaintiff on condition of his promise to marry defendant within two months, a stay of execution being put on the verdict till the marriage ceremony is complete. Mr. Hemphil – The case is like the comedy, “All’s well that ends well” (laughter). He immigrated to the United States in 1874. John was 5 feet 10 ½ inches tall, with a dark complexion, gray eyes, and gray hair. He became a naturalized citizen on November 8, 1886 in Napa County Superior Court. In 1888, he worked as a farmer in Suscol, Napa County. In 1899, he worked as an assistant attendant for the Napa State Hospital. He lived in the fifth ward of Napa, Napa County, California in 1910. He then worked as a real estate agent. He married Mary (born ca. 1864 in Ireland) in 1883. Their children, all born in California, were: Matthew (born September 5, 1884), Thomas Charles (born October 13,. 1887), Edmund Percival Anglim (born ca. 1890), Archibald (William Archie ?) (born February 14, 1898), Harold (born 1900), and Clifford (born 1904). In 1910, Matthew was an engineer and Edmund was a clerk.154 In 1930, John and Mary lived on 672 39th Street, Richmond, Contra Costa, CA, By that time, John had retired.155 By 1936, they lived at 4237 Howe Street, in Oakland. In 1915, John Matthew Anglim was a salesman, who roomed at 229-9th, in Oakland.156 In 1930, John M Anglim (born ca. 1885 in California) lived at 557 Lake Park Avenue in Oakland, Alameda, CA, with his wife, Ruby Jane (Busse) Anglim (born September 4, 1889 in Iowa). They married ca. 1923. John worked as a securities salesman, while Ruby was a stenographer at a brokerage.157 He passed away on November 1, 1954 in Napa California. He is interred at Tulocay Cemetery. Thomas C. Anglim, born October 13, 1887, in California, lived on First Street in Napa Township, Napa County, California in 1920. He was married to Ethel (born 1892). Thomas was an attorney , and Ethel was a teacher.158 He was politically active, including serving as the Secretary of the Curry for Governor Club in Napa in 1910. He was active in the community, including reading the Declaration of Independence for Napa’s Independence day celebration in 1912. He became a justice of the peace for Napa Township in 1921. He was District Attorney of Napa County ca. 1923-1927. He led raids against the violators of Prohibition in Napa County, and investigated high profile crimes, such as in the case of the murder of E.E. Hoppe, an 83 year recluse, in 1925. He was named as a member of the California State Civil Service Commission.159 He died in May 1934 and was survived by his wife, Ethel, and his daughter, Sally.160 In 1937, Ethel Anglim, the widow of T.C. Anglim, lived at a house at 2040 Stockton, in Napa City.161 In 1947, Mrs. Ethel Anglim lived at 1760 Spruce. She also lived in St. Helena, CA.162 In 1937, Edmund P. Anglim (1890- ), a clerk, and his wife, Eva, lived in their house at 1031 Napa, in Napa City. Charles Anglim roomed with them.163 In 1947, Edmund P. and Evelyn Anglim lived at 519 Wilson, in Napa. In 1948, they lived at 1718 York, Napa. From 1947-1948, Edmund P. Anglim worked as a laborer.164 In 1930, William Archie Anglim (born February 14, 1898 in Napa County, California) lived at 5638 Oak Grove Avenue,in Oakland, Alameda, CA, with his wife, Ruth E Anglim (born ca. 1894). They were married ca. 1926. In 1930, William was a foreman of a wholesale manufacturing plant, while Ruth was a clerk at a drug store.165 William A. Anglim was native Napan who attended Napa schools. He became a lawyer and was a regional cooperative specialist for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), headquartered in San Francisco, ca. 1938. The FSA provided special funds as loans to farmers who wanted to purchase expensive equipment cooperatively. In 1939, he was the regional chief of the community and cooperative service division of the FSA. During World War II, the War Food Administration (WFA) was formed and had seven regions to administer the farm labor program. William A, Anglim, based in San Francisco, was a regional director for Region 6 in San Francisco, which served Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.166 His job included the field administration of Mexican agricultural workers brought in to the United States to alleviate a serious labor shortage in the southwestern United States. After World War II, William Anglim became state head of the Department of Agriculture labor branch at Berkeley. He became involved in disputes such as that between the DiGiogio Farms at Arvin and the striking National Farm Labor Union. At issue, were 130 Mexican nationals, which the union alleged were being used as strikebreakers.167 Later, he served as regional representative to the commodity Credit Corporation of the Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1964.168 He was an active member of the California Bar Association. He died on January 8, 1974 in Berkeley.169 His wife, Ruth E. Anglim died on December 15, 1962.170 Both were interred in Napa.171 James Harold Anglim was born November 8, 1900, Napa California. He received his AB (with honors) from Stanford in 1923 and his JD from Stanford in 1925. he was admitted into the California Bar in 1925. Legal Fraternity: Phi Alpha Delta. Member: Alameda County and American Bar Associations; State Bar of California. He went to Washington DC to work with the US Attorney General’s office.172 He was expected to work for his brother, Thomas C. Anglim, then District Attorney for Napa County. Thomas Anglim, however, was not reelected. James Anglim then went to Oakland to practice law in 1926. He married Theodora Kaiser, of North Bend Oregon, at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, in North Bend, in July 1936.173 James Anglim became a member of the firm Fitzgerald, Abbott & Beardsley in 1934, and served as a member of the firm’s board until 1953. He was a senior partner of the firm ca. 1963-1967. The firm was located, circa 1952-1959, at 1516 Central Building, Oakland 12, California. By 1967, the firm had re-located to: Suite 1730. First Western Building. 1330 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612. This firm provided legal service for: Pacific States Steel Corporation (ca. 1952-67); Transamerica Development Co. (ca. 1967); Herrick Corporation (fabricator of steel products) (formerly Herrick Iron Works (ca. 1952-67); Universal Window Co. (ca. 1952-67); Pacific Pipe Co.(ca. 1952-67); Peterson Tractor & Equipment Co. (ca. 1952-67), Skagg's Payless Drugstore (ca. 1967); El Dorado Bank Napa Cal. (ca. 1967); Ventura Coastal Corporation (growers, processors and shippers of citrus products) (ca. 1967); Pacific Plumbing Co. (ca. 1967); Peterbilt Motors Co. (ca. 1967); Sunset View Cemetery Association (ca. 1967); Connell Motor Co. (ca. 1967); M.K. Blake Estate Co. (ca. 1967); Clay Canyon Minerals Inc. Anglim was a deeply religious man, and family life was important to him. He was a legal advisor to Catholic Charities, a Director of Holy Name College, and a member of the Council for the Order of the Holy Sisters of Jesus and Mary.174 James H. Anglim passed away on August 1977 in Piedmont, California (near Oakland, California). Thomas Anglim, born ca. 1898, in California, lived in Napa, Napa County, California in 1920.175 Clifford C. Anglim (born ca. 1905 in California) married Catherine (born ca. 1906 in Indiana). ca. 1928. In 1930, they lived at 321 30th Street, in Richmond, CA. He graduated from St. Mary’s College in 1928. He was a manager of the credit ratings bureau and was secretary of the merchants’s association. He became an attorney in 1928. Clifford was an attorney and Catherine was a public school teacher.176 He was a strong supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He seconded John N. Gardner’s nomination when he attended the 1936 Democratic National Convention. He was chair of the California State Democratic Party in 1936,177 finance of the Democratic National Committee, 1936, and headed the Roosevelt-Gardner campaign in California in 1936. Anglim was supported by US Senator McAdoo. He was considered a possible nominee for governor or lietenant governor in 1938. He represented Contra Costa County in the California State Assembly, from 1933 through 1935. He did not seek reelection to the Assembly. During his tenure, he coauthored the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge legislation and sponsored legislation creating the Central Valley Water Project.178 He became the director of the Federal Housing Administration office for Northern California in San Francsico in 1934.179 In 1937, Clifford Anglim’s law office was at the American Trust Building, 314 10th , room 413, in Richmond. He also had an office at Martinez City. He was nominated and confirmed as Collector of Internal Revenue in San Francisco, on February 10, 1938.180 He held that position until 1942. He continued to be involved in politics. In 1942, Clifford chaired the Committee to elect Gordon Garland, then the Assembly Speaker, to the State Board of Equalization. Also in 1942, Governor Culbert Olson reportedly lent his support to Anglim to oppose Republican Congressman Albert E. Carter’s reelection in the Sixth Congressional District. Anglim, however, did not run for Congress. Clifford was active in several religious and civic associations, including the Knights of Columbus, and was state president of the Elks in 1943.181 He was kidnapped, but later released in 1946.182 By 1947, Clifford and Catherine Anglim lived at 2701 Grant Avenue, in Richmond. Clifford C. Anglim served as city attorney of El Cerrito, CA, from 1942 through 1957.183 Clifford died on September 3, 1957 at 53.184 Edmund Percival Anglim (December 28, 1889-May 26, 1956). He met his wife, Eva Wildley (from near Cincinnati, Ohio) in California in 1918. In 1937, Edmund, then working as a a clerk, and Eva, lived in their house at 1031 Napa, in Napa City. Charles Anglim roomed with them.185 In 1947, Edmund P. and Evelyn Anglim lived at 519 Wilson, in Napa. In 1948, they lived at 1718 York, Napa. From 1947-1948, Edmund P. Anglim worked as a laborer.186 Charles E. Anglim (born 1920). Graduated 1945 with an LLB. He worked as a patent attorney in Berkeley, CA. Charles E. Anglim was married to Paule Anglim. They are divorced. Paule Anglim is French Canadian and owns an art gallery, Gallery Paule Anglim, on 14 Geary Street, in San Francisco (see chapter on Anglim businesses). She now lives in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco. Paule is also a trustee with the San Francisco Art Institute. Philip Anglim graduated from Yale with a BA in Drama. Actor in several theatrical productions, including the Broadway play, The Elephant Man and the TV mini-series, The Thornbirds in which he played "Dane". In addition to acting, Philip is also writing screenplays. Philip Anglim's Career Actor-Producer Philip Anglim was born on February 11, 1953 in San Francisco, California. He earned his BA in English at Yale University in 1975. Philip began acting at Yale, making his debut in "Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern" at the Yale Theatre in 1970. He then branched out to stock and regional theater, playing at the Southbury (CT.) Playhouse in 1972, before appearing in such shows as "What the Butler Saw" and "The Contrast" at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park from 1975-76. He also performed at the American Place in 1976 and the Berkshire Theatre, Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1977. Philip made his New York stage debut in "Snow White, You're Gonna Be Alright" in 1976. He made subsequent New York stage appearances in "Jamie Boy", "The Judgment", and "The Elephant Man". He also co-produced the Broadway musical "Tintypes". Philip is perhaps best-known for his role as the deformed 19th-century John Merrick in the Broadway version of the "Elephant Man". Philip was still largely unknown when he optioned for the London play. It debuted off-Broadway at St. Peter's Church before moving to the Booth Theater on Broadway in 1979. Philip portrayed a character of radical innocence, a creature of physical monstrosity, and inner beauty. The play was a critical as well as a popular triumph and it established Philip as one of the theater's most impressive young actors. For this role, Philip received the following awards in 1979: the Tony Award for best play, the Drama Desk Award for Best Actor, the Outer Circle Critics Award, the Obie Award for Performance, and a Theatre World Award. Philip went on to appear in the NBC-TV version of that play in 1982, although John Hurt played another interpretation of the character on film. Philip appeared briefly off-Broadway in Barry Collin's "Judgement" (1980) in the basement theater of St. Peter's Church at CitiCorp. The "Judgment" was a one-man play based on a historical incident in which some Russian soldiers, imprisoned by the Nazis during World War II, resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. The play was set up as an inquisition before the Soviet army, with Philip playing one of the two surviving officers (Captain Vukhov) - and the only one who was still lucid. He stood alone on stage and explains his conduct during the ordeal to his imagined inquisitors. Later in 1980, Philip played the lead role in "Macbeth" (1980), directed by Sarah Caldwell. The next year, he played the playwright Michael Cape in O'Neill's overtly autobiographical "Welded" (1981), which was based on O'Neill's relationship with his wife, Agnes Boulton. He played "Kim", a wealthy New York businessman who was described as a "moral zombie", in Howard Korder's "Search and Destroy" (1990) at the South Coast Repertory in Orange County, CA. More recently, Philip played the lead in the touring company of "M. Butterfly" (1990). In David H. Hwang's "M. Butterfly", Philip played a duped French diplomat so emotionally susceptible that he falls in love and has an affair with a lovely Peking diva who turns out to be a man "in drag". The diplomat was convicted of espionage for passing classified documents to his lover, who is employed as a spy by the Chinese government. Philip played the writer in Mart Crowley's "For Reasons That Remain Unclear" (1993), about a Roman Catholic priest and a former student turned Hollywood screenwriter who meet again by chance in Rome after several years and sift through their explosive past. This dramatic confrontation features the student seeking vengeance for past transgressions in a cat-and-mouse game that explodes with force in the final half-hour. It premiered at the Olney Theater in Olney, Md., outside of Washington DC. Philip made his feature film debut with a small role in support of Jon Voight in "The All American Boy" in 1973. In his first significant film role, Philip portrayed a local priest at a loss for encouraging words, in the nuclear disaster film "Testament" in 1983. He played a hateful malevolent henchman in the Burt Reynolds hired-killer thriller, "Malone" (1987). In the "Haunted Summer" (1988), Philip played Lord Byron in a sensual tale of a fateful night in 1816 when English Romantic poets Percy Shelly and Lord Byron, joined "Frankenstein" author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and Shelley's sister, Claire Claremont to explore their darkest dreams. He then played in "The Man Inside" (1990) and as Franz Kafka in the multi-national production "Milena" (1990). "Milena" is the true story of a Polish journalist and confidante of Kafka who challenges the doctrinaire editors of the Communist paper she reports for. Philip also had a supporting role -- as a ghost -- in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" (1980), but asked to have his part and credit removed from the film. Philip made his television debut as Charles Adams II in "The Adams Chronicles" (PBS, 1976). He made subsequent appearances in "Tomorrow's Families" (PBS) and as the pious young priest, Dane O'Neil, in the "Thornbirds" (ABC, 1983). He has appeared in the showtime film "Curacao" (1993), the NBC pilot "The Book" (1995), and as Vedek Bareil on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (syndicated, 1992-1995). Philip also guest-starred in an episode of “Millennium” (working with Megan Gallagher, Terry O’Quinn, and Bill Smitrovich) and appeared in the 1998 “Dallas” TV special “War of the Ewings” along with Tracy Scoggins.
