Kelly Enos - Assessing Training: How do we improve teaching and learning

The assessment of teaching and learning is critical if instructors want to improve instruction. Instructors are obligated to determine if they are meeting the learning needs of those students, getting into the habit of receiving feedback, making changes, and re-assessing to improve teaching and learning in the classroom. This course will provide proven simple methods of how to assess learning in the classroom which ultimately leads to improved police performance.

Mr. Kelly William Enos is the Vice Chair of the Administration of Justice Program at Los Angeles Mission College. Prior to entering the education field, Mr. Enos served with the Culver City Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is a F.B.I. certified instructor and also serves on the faculty at California State University, Los Angeles in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics. Richard Fairburn - Ambush: Win the Fight!

Lecture, which includes using several audio/video clips to illustrate ambush incidents and the techniques needed to increase an officer's likelihood of prevailing in such a fight.

More than 40 years LEO experience, including 20 as a full-time trainer at the Illinois State Police academy. Have contributed to police magazines/websites for 35 years, including numerous research projects in police firearms/tactics training. Currently back in active LE as the Public Safety Director for an Illinois community.

Dr. Patrick Faircloth - You are not under arrest: Interpersonal Communication with Loved Ones

In a study (Faircloth, 2011) officers reported significant conflict between work and home relationships. Anecdotally, officers reported, "Sometimes I feel like I am interrogating my family." Police officers are trained in very specific forms of communication for use on duty. Arguably, officers are not trained how to "code switch" their communication style when off duty. Participants will learn and demonstrate skills related to wellness assessment, basic interpersonal skills and techniques for officers and loved ones to acquire an alternative form of communication.

Dr. Patrick K. Faircloth, PhD, LPC (AL/MI), NCC, AMHCA Diplomate, is an Assistant Professor at Troy University, Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation, Interpreter Training. He is a U.S.A.F. veteran (Law Enforcement). A brief list of his areas of interest are: Ethics, Gender, Career and Police Issues. His dissertation was titled, Gender, Identity, and Career: An Investigation of Gender Role Conflict and Job Satisfaction with Police Officers. He is an associate member of F.O.P. Lodge 57 Troy AL

Vicki Farnam - Successful Firearms Training: From Struggling to Competence

Firearms training time is always limited which mandates that the words used for lecture and for coaching live fire drills on the range must be concise, clear, and exact. Replace those well worn but commonly used, trite phrases, like "watch your front sight" and replace them with precise instruction which will develop competent accuracy skills for struggling shooters.

Vicki Farnam has been teaching firearms for over thirty years with DTI, Inc. She has specifically taught instructor classes for many local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and academies as well as the US Marines. She is the co-author of two books, "Teaching Women to Shoot, A Law Enforcement Instructor's Guide", and "Women Learning to Shoot, A Female Officer's Guide".

Nik Farooqui - Responding to the Dynamics of A Knife Attack

This course is designed to help you respond to attacks with an edged weapon. We will going thru an entire process of identifying pre-cursors of an attack, common attacks, and best options to respond to the attack in a close quarter environment. You'll also be learning our "formula" to achieve functional, usable, repeatable skills in a short period of time.

Nik Farooqui is the CEO/Director of Training Operations for S2 Strategic Defense. He has been teaching LE/Security, Corporate, and Civilian clients for nearly 20 years including over 200 seminars both domestic and international. Mr. Farooqui has also owned several training academies and been featured in publications such as SWAT Magazine, Black Belt and others.

Joe (Little Joe) Ferrera - Threat Pattern Recognition Firearms Training

This course will review statistics on firearms assaults on officers and identify the most common threats officers face. Through video, lecture and demonstration participants will gain a better understanding of an assailant's attack times and motion versus officer response times. Useable skills will be introduced to the participants to help counter the most common firearms attacks. Participants will be instructed in recognizing patterns of movement and micro movements by assailants.

Joseph (Little Joe) Ferrera has over 40 years experience in L/E & Corrections. He has been training officers for 28+ years. He is on staff at a police academy in the Detroit area. He has presented at ILEETA, ASLET, IALEFI, ALETC, and various local and national conferences in the U.S. and Canada. He is a H.F.R.G. staff instructor and presents instructor training in Threat Pattern Recognition.

Todd Fletcher - At The Speed of a Gunfight!

This class provides firearms instructors with drills, tips, tricks, and techniques for developing the combative speed and accuracy officers will need should the unthinkable become their reality. Instructors will challenge their ability to deliver shots with combative speed and practical accuracy while developing the skills necessary to facilitate effective adult learning. This class is designed as an instructor development class. Attendees will demonstrate the ability to perform speed and accuracy drills, provide feedback to shooters, and diagnose shooting errors.

Todd Fletcher is a sergeant in Central Oregon with over 23 years of law enforcement experience. He has presented firearms and instructor development training nationwide and at multiple regional, national, and international conferences. Todd is part of the IALEFI Master Instructor training cadre, and a staff instructor for NLEFIA. He owns Combative Firearms Training, LLC providing firearms training and instructor development classes to law enforcement, military, private security, and armed citizens. Ms. Fournier-Harsin has been teaching in the law enforcement/criminal justice community for over 11 years. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and previously worked for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension where she was a senior trainer and auditor. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States educating law enforcement officials about the information that is available via the Nlets.

Keith Funderburk - Leadership for the Line Officer

This presentation on leadership is designed to start a trend in leadership that begins with the new officer. Leadership training within law enforcement often starts later in an officer’s career, this short course is a movement to start leadership training in the beginning of an officer’s career. Jamey Gadoury - Leading in Darkness: Suicide Risk, Prevention, and Response

Suicide. We may respond well to a call, but it’s different when the threat is in our own ranks. Many of us do not want to talk about it, and for some it is too close to home. The issue of suicide is complex, but information - even apps - are available. The aim of this course is straightforward: to provide knowledge, resources, and action steps for preventing and responding to suicide within law enforcement. There will be a strong research base, and the research sources will be specific. Trainers will leave with an outline suicide protocol that they can adapt for their own and agency use.

Jamey has spent over 20 years learning, practicing, and teaching leadership and has learned from success AND failure. He graduated West Point with a BS in Psychology, instructed at Ranger School, and led in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. As a civilian, Jamey integrated the Master Army Profession and Ethic Trainer course and facilitated suicide prevention classes. He now serves leaders and organizations in their development and is completing a Master of Arts in Counseling.

Colin is also a skilled marksman and competitor and can be seen the History Channel’s hit reality TV show TOP SHOT, Season 4.

Stephanie Gibson - Wellness - Surviving a Career in Law Enforcement and Beyond

To bring to your attention some factors that greatly affect our health and wellness and things that we don’t talk about very often, if at all. These factors are not unique to LE, but the crossroads of our profession . We want officers to think about wellness as being as important as other threats (by the numbers) and inspire officers to think beyond “getting to retirement,” and set realistic goals for wellness and thrive “beyond” retirement.

Officer Stephanie Gibson has over twenty years experience with Columbus Ohio Police Department where she teaches In-Service and Recruits. Officer Gibson holds a doctoral degree in Human Services from Capella University. Officer Gibson teaches at three different universities, in addition to her current position.

Mark Gladfelter - Use of Force and the SRO

“Another SRO making national headlines over excessive use of force.” Some of these are just that, an excessive use of force, some are justified uses of force, and many are failure to train issues which result in SROs excessive use of force complaints. This is an Instructor Development Class that is a “must have” for UOF Trainers who teach SROs so they can become up to date on current case law for officers who work or respond to calls in a school and will also be extremely useful for Chiefs or others who may supervise SROs to help guide policy.

I have been a full time police officer for the past 21 years. I have spent the last 16 years working as a School Resource Officer and I am a National Trainer for the National Law Enforcement Training Center and have taught for them for the last 18 years. I am also a Use of Force Instructor at the Central Missouri Police Academy based out of the University of Central Missouri. I am also a NRA certified, pistol, shotgun and patrol rifle Instructor and a Missouri POST Generalist Instructor.

James Glennon - Street Survival Training 2018

The Street Survival Seminar addresses the realities of law enforcement officer deaths from a 24/7 perspective and how to address these issues during in house training. Kevin Gors - Asymmetrical Counterterrorism

Counterterrorism has always been taught from the mindset of Asymmetrical Warfare where terrorists rely on strategy because they are considered the weaker combatants. This is no longer true. Due to advancements, terrorists now have a significant edge and mindsets must be changed to defeat them. JJ Goulbourne - Conducting Social Media Investigations: Tools & Techniques

This course will introduce attendees to various tools and techniques for conducting social media investigations in criminal and counterterrorism cases.

JJ is currently Training Coordinator for CoxHealth Public Safety & Security and a Commissioned Deputy Sheriff. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Center for National Threat Assessment / American Board for Certification in Homeland Security. .Nicholas Greco IV - Recognizing and Responding to Mental Illness

Officer response to mentally ill and emotionally disturbed individuals is rising, and officers need knowledge and training to safely interact with persons presenting abnormally. Attendees will learn about the most commonly seen major mental disorders. They will understand the similarities and differences between drug-induced psychosis, mixed state psychosis, and general psychosis. Participants will learn about the latest psychotropic medications across psychiatric conditions. Lecture will be supported by cases and examples to demonstrate successful officer response and interactions.

Nick brings over 20 years of mental health experience and multidisciplinary global training for civilians and law enforcement on topics including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicide risk and prevention, dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder, burnout, and vicarious traumatization. He has authored over 300 book reviews, and given over 150 professional presentations.

Daniel Greene - The Leading Edge FTO

Law enforcement culture changes on a regular basis. New tactics, technology and techniques are introduced to the law enforcement community daily. As law enforcement instructors, the responsibility to teach and train our peers falls on our shoulders. It is important to be on the leading edge of instruction. That is even more true in the realm of Field Training. This course will help the FTO stay on that leading edge of instruction with discussion on adult learning philosophies, positive learning environments, 21st century expectations and the benefits of a defensible FTO program.

Dan is a 21 year veteran from Chandler, Az with a combined 15 years of experience as an FTO or FTO Supervisor. Dan is also an AZPOST Subject Matter Expert in Instructor Development. Dan is currently the President of the National Association of Field Training Officers and sits on the board of the NAFTO Arizona chapter. Dan is an instructor with Command Presence and developed their FTO course, The Leading Edge FTO. Dan was honored last year with the 2017 ILEETA Trainer of the Year Award.

Matthew Griffin - Fighting Fentanyl: Addressing the Opioid Epidemic

During this training course we will breakdown Fentanyl and discuss the rise to Opioid abuse along with how to protect yourself from accidental exposure and possible overdose. We will familiarize you with the latest trends in packaging and distribution methods. From the onset of an overdose, an Officer can die in less than 3 minutes. During this class you will learn how to recognize the symptoms and respond to an Officer overdose. We will give you the tools you need to put policy and training in place at your home agency to field test and preserve evidence safely and responsibly.

Matt Griffin is a fourteen-year law enforcement veteran specializing in narcotic-related investigations. Matt started his police career with the Virginia Beach Police Department in August of 2003. He was assigned to the 3rd precinct where he received several accolades including the Class Act Award for initiative and motivation.

Chad Gruenstern - Dry Fire Drills for DAAT and Firearms

This class contains a short presentation on the importance of dry fire drills. We will cover different options for dry fire drills and discuss pros / cons of those methods. The class will then be shown and perform multiple dry fire drills they can take back to their own departments for training. If time permits, the class will be opened up to allow students to discuss drills they may have used in the past.

Sergeant Gruenstern has been a police officer for 16 years. He has taught firearms since 2005 and has several other certifications. In 2015, he attended the first and, so far only, SIRT Master Instructor Course in Seattle, with 16 other students. Sergeant Gruenstern also teaches civilian concealed carry and firearms classes.

Sgt (ret) Don Gulla is a 33 year veteran with King County Sheriff's Office in WA State and Founder of Gulla's Arrestling. He is the Chief SIRT Pistol Instructor and Senior Master Taser Instructor, Master DT and Firearms Instructor. Full time SWAT Team for 12 years and an Academy Instructor for 7 years. He's a 5 time World Police & Fire Game Gold Medalist in Karate with 49 years in Martial Arts. Currently Coordinates CIT for All King County Agencies. He was 2017 CIT Coordinator of the Year.

Lou Ann Hamblin - Building Warrior Women Trainers-A Collaborative Approach

The concept of this presentation is framed around women in law enforcement and training in the "hard skills" categories. Topics will include identifying those attributes that are common in women who are attracted to physical skills instruction, recruiting and retaining females into training units such as firearms, first aid/tac med, D.T. EVO, physical training and perceived challenges that women have in those training realms, social and otherwise compared to other countries and professions. Focusing on building a diverse training cadre and mentoring efforts will also be addressed by a panel of experienced and well recognized instructors.

Lou Ann proudly served the law enforcement profession for 22 years before retiring. She holds a Master's degree in Human Performance Technology and Instructional Design. Lou Ann specializes in training female officers (having trained over 3900 L.E. women in pistol alone) and is a certified firearms and defensive tactics instructor in a variety of disciplines. She instructs locally and internationally in the areas of instructor development, training for specialty units, females and officer survival.
