    1. Turn the wheels all the way to the left

    2. Slowly back up monitoring the right front fender until you are parallel with and within 12 inches of the curb.


    16. Parallel Parking – Exiting the Space:



    1. Back-up as far as you can go without touching the vehicle behind and signal

    2. Turn your wheels all the way to the left and shift to Drive

    3. Check traffic and make sure your right front fender will clear the rear of the vehicle in front of you

    4. Turn wheels slowly to the right when your side view mirror aligns with the bumper of the vehicle ahead

    5. Select target in your path of travel and gently accelerate

    17. Parking on a Hill – Facing Downhill



    1. Parking with or without a curb

    2. Position your vehicle 6” from the curb

    3. Let the car move slowly forward while turning the steering wheel sharply to the right until the right front tire rests against the curb

    4. Shift into “P” (Park) if your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission or into REVERSE gear for a manual transmission



    18. Parking on a Hill – Uphill with No Curb:



    1. Drive as far off the roadway onto the shoulder as possible and stop

    2. Turn wheels away from traffic

    3. Shift into “P” (Park) automatic transmission, or into FIRST gear for a manual transmission

    4. Engage the parking brake

    19. Parking on a Hill – Uphill With a Curb:



    1. Position your vehicle 6” from the curb and stop

    2. Turn your steering wheel away from curb and let the vehicle move slowly back until the back of the front tire touches the curb

    3. Shift into “P” (Park) if your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission or FIRST with a manual transmission  


    4. Uphill Parking

      Engage the parking brake 

    20. Parking Lot Strategies:



    1. Obey speed limits

    2. Obey the signs and pavement markings

    3. Do not drive diagonally across parking lot lane markings

    4. Be alert for pedestrians, bicyclists, roller-bladders and skateboarders

    5. Avoid tight parking spaces

    6. Avoid competing for a parking space

    7. Park so the front and rear of vehicle is not in the flow of traffic

    8. Position the vehicle properly in the space

    9. Secure parking brake

    10. Secure the vehicle, locking valuables in the trunk

    11. Search all directions before exiting the parking space

    12. Watch for drivers backing who may not see vehicles to the rear

    21. Parking Garage Strategies:



    1. Watch for backup lights

    2. Observe and follow all signs

    3. Stay to the right

    4. Use headlights

    5. Be aware of people in and around the garage

    6. When entering the parking garage, be aware of your surroundings, approach the vehicle with key in hand, look around and in the vehicle for unwanted passengers

    7. Drive slowly and watch for pedestrians

    22. Handicapped Parking:



    1. Vehicles displaying this symbol on their license plate or in the car on a special card may park in handicapped spaces

    2. Non-handicapped drivers are prohibited from parking in handicapped parking areas and may be fined ($100 +) for violations

    3. A disabled person will be fined $500.00 if he/she lets someone use his/her parking placard and can have parking privileges revoked.
