Glossary

TERM	DEFINITION
Bill of Lading	The document and/or contract used to record and transfer detail information pertaining to a unique shipment.
Bill of Lading Number	The unique number assigned by the shipper in creating the Bill of Lading, which identifies the unique shipment
Delivery Distribution Center (DDC)	Distribution Center the processes white goods (appliances, large tv’s, etc.) for home delivery.
GS1-128	A subset of the Code 128 barcode symbology that is utilized exclusively for GS1 System data structures.
Less Than Truckload (LTL)	Freight, typically less than 10,000 pounds, from several shippers loaded onto one trailer.
Logistic Unit	An item of any composition established for transport and/or storage that needs to be managed through the supply chain. It is identified with SSCC.
PRO number	A unique number assigned by the LTL carrier to identify a specific shipment.
Purchase Order (PO)	A transaction issued by a buyer to a seller, indicating the type, quantities and agreed prices for products or services that the seller will provide to the buyer. Sending a PO to a supplier constitutes a legal offer to buy products or services.
Regional Distribution Center (RDC)	Distribution Center that processes brown goods for store delivery.
SCAC	Standard Carrier Alpha Code. A two to four-letter alpha code uniquely identifying a carrier. Carrier SCAC codes are assigned and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). To obtain a SCAC code or the list of all carrier SCAC’s, contact the NMFTA at 703-838-1868.
Shipment	Truckload or Less Than Truckload: A supplier sending one or more shipping containers or transport packages to a single retailer’s destination. This shipment may be one or more supplier orders and one or more retailer’s purchase orders, or partial purchase orders. The shipment is under one bill of lading. Small package or parcel: To a small package service carrier, each transport package is one shipment. Each package is assigned a unique identification number by the carrier to facilitate the movement through their system.
SSCC	Serial Shipping Container Code. The GS1 Identification Key used to identify logistics units. The key is comprised of GS1 Company Prefix, Serial Reference, and Check Digit.
Small Package	A shipment that is too small (by weight, volume, and/or number of cartons), to be transported via a standard motor carrier freight company. Typical small package carriers are the United States Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS.
Truckload (TL)	Large-volume shipment from a single customer that weighs over 10,000 pounds or takes up the trailer space so no other shipment can be loaded.
Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI)	A collaborative retailer/vendor relationship for Inventory replenishment whereby the vendor takes over the forecasting and procurement of their products into Best Buys stores The vendor then refills the stock automatically, without Best Buy initiating purchase orders.
