Another of the divers controversies surrounding this murder is the question of assessing the credibility of the Ramseys, JR and PR specifically. Questions arose almost immediately when the police responded to PR’s 911 call. Those who advance theories favorable to the Ramseys, such as the Intruder Did It Theorists (IDI), as they are cynically called, have in most cases adopted the state of mind argument in the Ramseys defense. This argument, taken to its extreme, essentially inoculates the Ramseys from any credibility assessment at all because, they argue, the Ramseys were in a state of shock and their statements cannot be trusted or properly understood by anyone not in their experience. This lack of trust, mind you, is not because of lack of credibility, but because we can’t expect them to get the facts straight given the stress they were under.
