Structural note: if we may digress for one moment: The overhead in this area appears to be a standard 8 foot ceiling, but may be slightly lower, say, 7 feet 10 inches. In the specific area of a possible “bat swing” we see a clearance of about 7 feet 8 inches. This is what necessitates treating a stature of 68” for the assailant as an absolute maximum, forcing the assailant to swing the bat in a modified, arc swing in which the axis of rotation is at shoulder level rather than head level. This compromise can be achieved without significantly reducing mechanical advantage. Any swing with an axis of rotation lower than that will result in significant loss of mechanical advantage. Therefore, a 68” stature for the assailant is an absolute maximum. A bludgeon object of about 28” should be identified by investigators as suspect. Please see the mechanical best-fit diagram for more information. We further note that as we progress further into the “boiler room”, headroom increases. Based on the combined analysis we’ve performed, we suspect it most likely the attack began in the back of the “boiler room” in the most concealed and controlled area possible. Items stored in that area should have been examined for recent activity (the killer would need to move them in order to prepare this location, then replace them when done; a clever act if the killer originally intended that the murder happen only in the back-most area of the “boiler room”).

As police arrived the scene of the crime was gradually deteriorating due to a failure to control the scene by police. PR/JR called numerous friends and many of them came over to the house. In the morning hours it was believed that a kidnapping had occurred and the realization that this was a crime scene might not have been as obvious as it would had it been known there was a murder instead. The rn created the expectation of a call to the Ramsey home between 8 and 10 a.m. that morning, or the following morning. It never came. There are numerous observations that have been made regarding the Ramsey’s behavior that morning and it is difficult to sort out what is credible and what isn’t. But fortunately, most of it relies on an understanding of PR’s and/or JR’s state of mind at the time, which we cannot know. Apart from that, some events are worth noting.

At some point before 1 p.m. the responding police officers all left the residence except for one detective, Linda Arndt. This was another mistake by the Boulder City Police department. It is not possible for one officer to secure a crime scene of that size. Thus, the detective had to work with what she had. This meant doing some things that further hampered the investigation but, from her perspective, were necessary. And, due to radio silence orders issued earlier, communication with the department and other officers was constrained to communication via telephone (this was done to prevent a possible perpetrator from listening in on police radio). During this time other visitors had also left and only 7 people were present; JR and PR, FW and his wife, the Fernie couple (another of their neighborhood friends) and detective Linda Arndt. It was simply impossible for Arndt to track the movements of all these people, something that should have been done. There has been some confusion about the approximate 1 hour plus disappearance of JR during the earlier morning hours in that some claimed he had simply gone to get the mail (this was JR’s explanation in his deposition). The house received mail via a mail-slot integral to the house structure and located by the front door. There was nowhere to go outside the home to retrieve mail. However, JR stated that he had gone to his company office to get mail there. Taking a state of mind averse view, we can say that we can’t rationalize his behavior at that time, but we certainly can see that placing yourself out of site of a police officer under those circumstances is highly suspect, inappropriate and downright bizarre. He tried to set up a flight twice, once early in the morning after the police showed up and then again when a dead body showed up, smacking of intent to flee to Georgia, but state of mind is a tricky business. After being advised that he cannot leave the state he settled for calling an attorney. Just to be clear, we’ve excluded all this from our best-fit analysis on the grounds that it speaks to state of mind. We mention it merely because the best-fit we finally reach will make these confusing facts suddenly make perfect sense. And we shall see that it has nothing to do with a shocking discovery of a body in the basement, but with a narcissistic, shocking fear of being caught.
