Spellings for this family's surname included Youlekem and Yolkecome. One source says that Valentine's father was Peter Yocum, III. Harold M. Yoakum: Valentine Yoakum born 1721 died 1773 is the seventh son of Francis and Millie (Felty) Yoakum (Yochem) born in New Amsterdam, followed his family to Pennsylvania. Then, to the northern neck of Virginia, and settled for a while on land near Peach Creek, a tributary of the south branch of the Potomac or Wappenconnec River, this is in what was then called Hampshire County, Virginia, and now a part of Hardy County, West Virginia. This area was part of a six million acre land grant from the King of England to Lord Fairfax, who encouraged the immigrants from Pennsylvania to settle the area. The Potomac River was then called “Appatomak” by the Indians and later became known by the English name of Potomac. History has it that George Washington was a part of the survey group employed by Lord Fairfax to mark the area into lots and estates, and one Phillip Yoakum worked with Washington on the survey on this huge land grant, which King Charles II made to Lord Fairfax in 1649. Valentine was one of the settlers arriving to this area in the 1750's, after the Sees, Stumps and Harness families had gone there in the 1740's. Original families had to pack the running gears of their wagons on horses over the mountains and roll the wagon wheels hand over hand.
