1855: author of A History of Texas, 1685-1845, 2 volumes.

29 Nov 1856: died Houston, Texas, Capital Hotel of pneumonia.

Martha Yoakum; Emily Yoakum; Henderson Yoakum

Henderson wrote a book on Yoakums.

Handbook of Texas Vol 2 p945: Henderson was a friend of Sam Houston. Yoakum County, Texas, created in 1876, was named for him.

Notes by P. G. Fulkerson: “It is my impression that Henderson King Yoakum was named for Richard Henderson who owned these lands and his friend King who owned another large grant here.”

Henderson Grant: “By a private act of the April 1783 session of the North Carolina Legislature, two hundred thousand acres of land were granted to Richard Henderson and others to be laid out in one survey and within the following boundary: beginning at the old Indian town in Powell's Valley [about two miles northeast of Yoakum's Station] and running down Powell's River, not less than four miles in width on one or both sides thereof to the junction of Powell's River and Clinch River, then down Clinch River on one or both sides, not less than twelve miles in length for the said complement of 200,000 acres. The act specifies how this land shall be divided between Henderson and his eight associates. The consideration of this grant was the expense, risk, and trouble of the grantees in making a purchase of lands from the Cherokees in the year 1774-75 and to extinguish their title to the lands so purchasesd.” Historical accounts do not mention a Yoakum was one of the eight associates.

From an article from the Missouri Historical Review entitled “The Boone, Hays and Berry Families of Jackson County” by Virginia Hays Asbury and Albert N. Doerschek:

“In 1798, having been dispossessed of his Kentucky lands, and, on his wife's advice, declining Florida as a new home after a pilgrimage there revealed to his eye no game worthy of his rifle, Daniel Boone entered and applied for a grant of two thousand acres in Upper Louisiana and emigrated with many of his friends, including William and Boone Hays, Richard Berry, Jesse Yoacham, father of Berry Yoacham, Isaac Van Bebber, Isaac Fulkerson and others, with all their families and effects, to Charette, on the Missouri River, where he became a commandant of the Femme Osage district under Spain.” This indicates that Jesse's wife, Anna, was a daughter of Richard Berry.

David L. Ballew: Jesse Yoakum came into Ray County, Missouri, about 1834 with his family. He died there and is buried in Yoakum's Cemetery near Taitsville, Missouri. He is probably the first Yoakum into Missouri, especially Ray County.

Mrs. J. M. (Shirley) Yoakum of Duncanville, Texas, stated that Philip Powell Yoakum was supposedly a son of Heinrich Yoakum of New Amsterdam and Greenbrier County, Virginia. She also says that Dr. Smith, in his Yocum book, has her family in Fannin County, Texas, all confused. She also says, “A story that I have heard is that Philip Powell Yoakum came from Virginia over the mountains and settled in West Virginia, which means he would be connected with the Virginia branch of Yoakums.”

The Yocum book by Smith says Phillip Powell Yokem emigrated from Germany, via Holland, in 1720.
