User Characteristics


  • Male proportion of Internet users is larger than female except in Macau, whose female proportion is equal to male proportion. In Malaysia, the male proportion is 56.4%, which is largest in all.

  • In Chinese Mainland and Malaysia, the largest group of Internet users is 15-24 age. In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, the largest group of Internet users is 25-34.

  • The largest group of Internet users is high /middle school degree in most regions except in Taiwan, whose largest Internet user group is bachelor/college degree, accounting for 50.7%.

  • In these five different regions, there are higher percentages of non-students as compared to that of students.

  • The biggest group of the Internet users in Malaysia falls on the second quartile, which accounts for 51.6%, while the biggest group of the Internet users in Taiwan falls on the third quartile which accounts for 29.4%.

Among these five regions, male proportion of Internet users is larger than female except in Macau, whose female Internet users are equal to male.

Especially in Malaysia, the male proportion is 56.4%, which is largest in all.

Males account for 55.8%, the other 44.2% is females in Chinese Mainland. Males account for 50.2% and females account for 49.8% in Taiwan. Males account for 52.4% and females account for 47.6% in Korea.

In Chinese Mainland and Malaysia, the largest group of Internet users is those who are 15-24 age, which accounts for 32.1% and 35.5% respectively. In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, the largest age group of the Internet users is 25-34, which accounts for 22.9%, 22.1% and 35.5% respectively.

The largest group of Internet users is high school/middle school degree in most regions except in Taiwan, whose largest Internet user group is bachelor/college degree, accounting for 50.7%.

In Chinese mainland, the high school/middle school degree group of Internet user accounts for 67.9%, higher than that in other regions.

In Korea, the elementary and below group of Internet user reaches 19.2%, higher than that in any other regions.

In these five different regions, there are higher percentages of non-students as compared to that of students. Especially in Malaysia, the non-students proportion (81.6%) of Internet users is the highest while in Korea and Chinese Mainland the student proportion is lowest (Both are 74.9%).

*Korea: Household income is categorized by (1) First income quartile (bottom quartile) :less than 1.5 million won; (2) Second income quartile: 1.5-2.5 million won; (3) Third income quartile : 2.5-3.5 million won; (4) Fourth income quartile (top quartile) : more than 3.5 million won; Exchange rate : 1USD≒1,112KRW(as of 2013.8.9).



The biggest group of the Internet users in Malaysia falls on the second quartile, which accounts for 51.6%.

The biggest group of the Internet users in Taiwan falls on the third quartile which accounts for 29.4%.

The biggest group of the Internet users in Korea falls on the “more than 3.5 million won” household income group.











Internet Usage Pattern


  • In Taiwan, Macau and Korea, most of the Internet users have been getting online for more than five years.

  • On average, users in Chinese mainland use the Internet 20.5 hours per week, which is the longest as compared to the other two regions. Users in Macau and Korea use the Internet 20.3 and 15.2 hours per week respectively.



People have been getting online more than 8 hours in all the three regions and Taiwan Internet users get online longer than other two regions.

Most of the Internet users in Taiwan, Macau and Korea get online more than five years, the percentage of which accounts for 85.0%, 78.4% and 80.4% respectively.




On average, users in Chinese mainland use the Internet 20.5 hours per week, which is the longest as compared to the other two regions. Users in Macau and Korea use the Internet 20.3 and 15.2 hours per week respectively.


Purpose of Using the Internet


  • Getting Information, Communication by text and Leisure are three most major purposes for using the Internet in most of the regions.

  • Downloading/upgrading software is one of the quite important purpose for Malaysia Internet users, while it is not so in other regions.

There are many purposes of using the Internet. Getting Information, Communication by text and Leisure are three most major purposes of using the Internet in most regions.

In Taiwan, Macau, Malaysia and Korea, most of the Internet users go online for getting information. But in Chinese Mainland, most of Internet users get online for leisure (90.9%). It is worth noting that, although Downloading/upgrading software is one of the quite important purpose for Malaysia Internet users, but it is not so in other regions.
