Hyde Farm: Student Activities

  1. Make a Proposal

The community members of Cobb County and Fulton County are in deep discussions about allowing the Hyde Farm to be developed to help revive the community’s economy. However, The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area would like to preserve its natural state for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration for the current individuals and future generations. Your task is to create a business plan that will help the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area save and preserve Hyde Farm. Chattahoochee National Recreation Area has a group of investors who have millions of dollars available for Hyde Farm to be a functioning farm for the community at large. To obtain funding, your group must develop a concept proposal for the Farm. This concept, or idea, proposal will include the following:

  • A general (creative!) theme for the farm; for example, Farm characters

  • A descriptive list of provided educational services

  • The impact it will have on the community

  • The impact it will have on the environment

  • Rationale for preserving Hyde Farm

  • Any other information that you think would make investors want to give you money

You will present your proposal to the investors and community members hoping to get the money you need to help keep Hyde Farm open. Your proposal should include all of the information listed above.

  1. Going Green

The Hyde Farm operation system consisted of using mostly natural resources. Make a list of the natural resources you see at Hyde Farm and discuss how important those resources were during that time period. Then describe various ways we can conserve energy and other natural resources today. Then as a group create either a commercial, announcement, or billboard about how we can help build a “culture of conservation” within our community.

  1. The 19th Century vs. The 21st Century

Using the information you have learned about the Hyde Farm, compare and contrast the Hyde family’s way of life to the way you and your family live today. Then describe in a poem, paragraph, or song about what the experience would be like if you were living at the Hyde Farm during the 19th century.

  1. Name That Tool

The Hyde Family used unique tools and equipment on the farm to help support their way of life. Your task is to identify various objects or tools you see and describe how and for what it was used. Please research using multiple sources to demonstrate your knowledge of each farm tool. Be sure to site all references.

  1. Exit Card

Directions: Answer the following questions below.

  1. How has Hyde Farm influenced the way we live today?

  1. Why do you think the Hyde family never modernized their way of life?

  1. How would you explain the importance of this historic site to the surrounding communities?

  1. What was the fundamental purpose of the Hyde Farm in the early 20th century?

  1. What were the most important things you learned today about the Hyde Farm?

Morgan Falls Dam: Harnessing the Power of the Chattahoochee

Caption

Ed’s Byline
By 1900 Atlanta was emerging as the dynamic new city of the South. To fulfill its potential as an (economically) viable city, important businessmen of Atlanta began to consider hydroelectric power. With Morgan Smith as a prominent investor, construction of a hydroelectric dam began in 1902 on the Bull Sluice site in what is known as Sandy Springs. The newly formed Atlanta Water and Electric Power Company constructed this massive early hydroelectric dam. Completed in 1904, the dam was 1031 feet long and 56 feet high. Morgan Smith did not live to see this project completed but the board of directors of the Atlanta Water and Electric Company named the facility the Morgan Falls Dam in his honor. It was said the Morgan Falls Dam helped to power the newly developed electric streetcars in Atlanta. Eventually the Morgan Falls Dam became part of the Georgia Power Company of today. The original generators, though refurnished, are still being used to provide power to metro Atlanta in modern times.

Morgan Falls Dam: Applicable Georgia Standards

SS8H7 The student will evaluate key political, social and economic changes that occurred in Georgia between 1877 and 1918.

L6-8WHST7 Conduct short research projects to answer a question.

Morgan Falls Dam: Student Activities

  1. During the progressive movement of the early 20th Century governments moved to regulate large municipal electric, gas, and water companies. A public service commission, elected by the people, was set up to regulate these companies. Research the modern Georgia Public Commission. Pretend that you and a partner are staff members of the commission. Prepare a two-page report detailing what you see as critical issues for the future of utility companies in Georgia.

  2. The city of Atlanta began to emerge as a great city of the South after the Civil War. With a partner, research the history of Atlanta from 1880 to 1920. Describe three important events during that period. Evaluate and rank each one. Be sure to tell why you ranked each one in the order that you did. As a class, discuss your findings.
