3.3 POPULATION OF STUDY
This study made it necessary, for effective results and findings, to select a certain number of school children of diverse backgrounds as a population of study. To meet this requirement, the study was limited to junior secondary schools in Lagos which is a cosmopolitan state in Nigeria.
From data retrieved on January 29, 2015, from the Lagos Eko Project, Lagos state has 671 secondary schools with an estimate of 633,247 students. From that same data, the number of Junior secondary schools was put at 349, but with no mention of the number of children therein, this research found it ideal to estimate the number of junior secondary school children at 320,000; which is slightly above have the total number of secondary school children accounted for.
This study’s population basically comprised of male and female students who should have had their basic primary level of education and aspire to grow academically. They are believed to be the early-scholars whose value for (and preference in) the media is still being formed, and can be guided towards a particular achievement.
