Access to Elected Office Fund

The grants help meet the additional support needs that a disabled person has that are associated with their disability. If this support were not provided, a disabled person may face an additional barrier in the selection and campaign processes compared to a non-disabled person.

The Equality Act 2010 defines a disabled person as someone with a ‘physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’. You must be disabled according to this definition to apply to the fund.

You can apply for money from the fund if you: can confirm you are eligible to stand for office under the requirements of electoral law, which are set out in the Electoral Commission’s guidance can provide evidence relating to your disability, and can show us evidence that you have been involved or interested in civic, community or other relevant activities.

This fund is for additional disability-related costs that you have to pay as part of standing for an election. It is not for general costs that any election candidate needs to meet such as campaigning costs (like leaflets). It also does not cover general living costs.

The minimum amount for which you may apply is £250 and the maximum is £10,000 in any calendar year (1 January to 31 December).

Application Form: Apply via an online system after you have checked your eligibility.

Freemasons' Grand Charity - Non-Masonic Grants

Grants are made only to charities in England and Wales which are registered with the Charity Commission. Regional or local charities should apply instead to the Provincial Grand Lodge of the region in which they operate. Provincial Offices are listed in telephone directories, usually under "Freemasons" or "Masons".

The Freemasons' Grand Charity gives grants principally in the following areas:

Vulnerable people (for example, people with disabilities or healthcare needs, older people and babies) Medical Research Youth Opportunities Hospices (separate programme)

Core funding grants of between £500 and £5,000 are given to smaller charities whose annual income does not exceed about £1 million.

Grants of between £5,000 and £50,000 are made only for a designated purpose and generally to larger charities. Funding may be granted for up to three-year periods in certain circumstances where there is evidence of an on-going need for charitable grant funding.

The majority of major grants awarded are for between £10,000 and £25,000 although a few grants of over £50,000 may be approved each year. Grants may be made for capital projects provided the application is for an identifiable element of the project

Grant applications are considered at meetings held in January, April and July.

Applications are currently being accepted for consideration at the meeting to be held in January 2012. The closing date for receipt of applications for presentation at this meeting has not yet been announced.

Hospice Grants - The hospice grants are made as part of a nationwide project and total approximately £500,000 each year. Hospice grant applications should be made on a separate form which is available from either the appropriate Provincial Grand Lodge, The Freemasons' Grand Charity office or to download from the Application Forms page of the website.

Medical Research Grants - Preference is given to medical research applications from charities that are members of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC). If a charity is not a member of the AMRC its research project should have been peer reviewed in accordance with the guidelines of the AMRC. We recommend that charities applying for a grant to fund medical research should read the AMRC guidance prior to submitting an application.

Grants for Religious Buildings - A small number of grants are awarded annually to religious buildings of national importance. Typically the grant will be for no more than £5,000. Please note that The Freemasons' Grand Charity does not accept direct approaches from applicants in this category. Applications are only considered following the recommendation of the Provincial Grand Lodge, which must also be supporting the appeal. Any Provincial Grand Lodge wishing to advance an application should, in the first instance, contact The Freemasons' Grand Charity to discuss the application and obtain a copy of the Religious Buildings Application Form.

To apply to The Freemasons' Grand Charity for a grant, a charity must complete the appropriate application form

All applications must be accompanied by a full copy of the charity's latest annual report and audited accounts.

Applications may be submitted to The Freemasons' Grand Charity office for the attention of the Head of Non-Masonic Grants, at any time throughout the year.

Major grant applications are considered at meetings held in January, April and July.

Charities should also offer The Freemasons' Grand Charity the opportunity for its support to be recognised and acknowledged publicly.

Application Form: Available to download from the website.

Petplan Welfare Grants

Grant applications must demonstrate a direct benefit to the species supported by Petplan Ltd (i.e. dogs, cats, horses and rabbits). Grants to human charities may be considered when it can be clearly demonstrated that the grant will enhance/give support to the animals' best interest.

Welfare may, if appropriate, include staffing, buildings, vehicles, equipment, food and veterinary fees. Education is seen as an important role for the welfare arm of the Charitable Trust so appeals for literature print will be considered together with other relevant requests.

The Welfare Committee then makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees and applicants will be informed of the Trustees' decision after the next Trustees' meeting (usually in March each year).

Creative people and places fund - Arts Council

The Arts Council will invest in a small number of places of greatest need to establish action research projects called Creative people and places. This investment will encourage long-term collaborations between local communities and arts organisations, museums, libraries and local authorities. It aims to empower them to experiment with radically different approaches and develop inspiring, sustainable arts programmes that will engage audiences in those communities.

Excellence will be central to the activity supported and although funding can only be guaranteed for three years, they would like to see applications which carry a 10-year vision for these communities.

A total of £37 million will be available to establish around 15 Creative people and places projects between autumn 2012 and autumn 2015. It is anticipated that the majority of proposals will be for between £500,000 and £3 million over three years.

All applicants must register their intention to apply with their regional Arts Council office by 23 March 2012. A full proposal will not be required at this stage.

There will also be frequently asked questions about the fund, so keep checking this page for regular updates.

Through the Creative people and places projects they will demonstrate the power of the arts to enrich the lives of individuals and make a positive difference to communities. The outcomes they are looking for include:

an increase in the numbers and range of people in those areas regularly getting involved in, and being inspired by, the arts a demonstrable increase in a high quality arts offer in places of least engagement sustainable projects and programmes that will help the arts and cultural sector to continue to extend and strengthen the reach of existing arts provision, and increase engagement a clear, common understanding of which approaches are the most successful
