Celebration of Mamta Diwas

The Government of Gujarat launched the ‘Mamta Diwas’ strategy under the Mamta Abhiyan first in Valsad on 2nd December 2006, which has been scaled up in the entire State. The main objective of this strategy is to strengthen routine immunization and growth monitoring, to reduce infant mortality as well as malnutrition among children. Fixed day, fixed site immunization sessions are upgraded as MAMTA Diwas (Health & Nutrition Day) at village level. A team of health and nutrition workers as well as ASHA workers provide services and mobilize the beneficiaries. On Mamta Diwas, a mother and child friendly environment is created at the Anganwadi Centres and exhibition panels on maternal and child health are displayed to educate the community.

  • World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations and National Nutrition Week celebrations

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from 1-7 August every year across the State. Awareness generation activities like mothers’ meetings, meetings of pregnant women, lactating women and adolescent girls are held to orient them about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. Health workers, AWWs, AWHs facilitate these meetings.

The National Nutrition Week is celebrated from 1-7 September every year across the State. Activities like recipe competition, demonstration of nutritious recipes, mothers’ meetings, importance of nutritious diet for pregnant and lactating women etc. are carried out during this week. Mothers are counseled on complementary foods to be given to children, importance of IFA tablets to improve hemoglobin, need and benefit of iodized salt, foods rich in iron and other nutrients etc.



  • Mamta Taruni (for out of school Adolescent Girls)

Mamta Taruni is a DWCD-RCH package for out of school adolescent girls 10-19 years delivered monthly on Mamta day (VHND) between 3-5 pm. Even before initiation of SABLA: Gujarat already has initiated a scheme for Adolescent girls – ‘Mamta Taruni day’ from April 2010.

Mamta Taruni day is a joint DWCD & DHFW Initiative which was launched State-wide. Scheme targets on 10-19 years out of school adolescent girls (married and unmarried) in rural areas. Out of 9,07,703 registered out of school adolescent girls approx. 5,91,490 adolescent girls have been provided services under the scheme till December, 2010

  • Package includes:

    • Bi yearly Hb estimation

    • IFA tablets

    • TT at 10 and 16 years

    • Quarterly: Weight and Height

    • ICDS Take Home Ration (3 packets of Upma, 2 packets of Sheera, 1 packet Sukhadi)

    • Referral to Adolescent Friendly Health Centre

    • Delivered by ANM, AWW, ASHA and Peer Educator (which a leader Adolescent girl selected 1 per village)

    • A compensation of Rs. 50/- AWW & Rs. 25/- PE is given provided atleast 10 Adolescent girls receive the benefits and services.



  • Demonstration of the recipes being made from THR

Food (THR) Demonstrations are being conducted for Pregnant and Lactating women, Adolescent girls and other community women at State level in Gandhinagar and in various districts like Tapi, Surat, Navsari, Ahmedabad etc. The major objective of such food demonstrations is to orient the audience about the various types of recipes that can be prepared from the four types of THR i.e. Sheera, Sukhadi, Upma and Bal Bhog.
