Occultation & return of 12th Imám.. .

According to Shí’ih belief, the Minor Occultation (al-ghayba al-ṣughra or ghaybat-i-ṣughrá) began in ah 260/ad 872, with the “disappearance” of the twelfth Imám, as a child. During this period, the Hidden Imám was still accessible through four successive “Gates” or Abwáb (pl. of Báb). This period lasted sixty–nine years (ah 260/ad 872—ah 329/ad 939). The Major Occultation (al-ghayba al-kubrá or ghaybat-i-kubrá) began with the death of the “Fourth gate” and ends with the return of the twelfth Imám. During this time the twelfth Imám supposedly lived in one of two mysterious cities, Jábulqá and Jábulsá, and he “disappeared” at Sámarrá, on the Tigris. A Traveller’s Narrative, p. 98.
