Academic Background

Ph.D.  University of Waterloo,  Waterloo, Ontario, Canada,  Urban and Regional Planning,  2003

M.A.  The American University in Cairo,  Cairo, Rgypt,  History of Art and Architecture,  1990

BARCH  Cairo University,  Cairo, Egypt,  Architecture,  1984

Include information below about courses taught, overall nature of workload assignment (including the percentage of time assigned to teaching, research, and service) and graduate student supervisory experience (theses/dissertations)

Teaching Activities (with emphasis on the past five years)

Course (New) - Creation/Delivery: Conventional

2007-2008 - PLAN 6050. Seminar on World Architecture and Urbanism. Survey and critical analysis of world architectural styles and urban patterns

2007-2008 - PLAN 6046. Planning and Design Studio. Analysis and development of sustainable solutions for real world urban and suburban developments

2007-2008 - PLAN 6003. Seminar on Urban Form and Design. Analysis of urban design theories, tools and determinants of urban form. Examines the design concepts, problems, and potentials associated with urban development projects of varying scales.

2007-2008 - Plan 4050 is a survey of world architecture and urbanism. It covers the development of architectural styles and urban patterns of Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Renaissance, Baroque, 19th Century Revival, Modern, Postmodern, High-Tech and Deconstruction. The course prepares students for planning, design, and history studies that require familiarity with historic and contemporary architectural styles and urban development patterns. The course lectures, seminars and readings encourage students to analyze the major components of world architectural styles and urban patterns as well as historical events, social traditions, cultural movements and prominent figures who played significant roles in the development of buildings and world cities.

2007-2008 - PLAN 3030. This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of planning education and practice and provided students with an open forum for informed planning debate. The course adopts the case-study method; each urban planning issue is presented through an-depth analysis of a real world planning problems. Examples include but not limited to the downtown revitalization plans of the cities of Greenville, Washington, and New Bern; the public transportation system and land use practices in Portland, Oregon, Metro Toronto, and The Raleigh Triangle Council of Governments.

Other Teaching Activities

2007-2008 - In addition to academic advising of 18 undergraduate planning students, I have supported several planning students to get admission to graduate studies and receive scholarships to support their undergraduate and graduate studies. Students received scholarships include: Stephen Nalley (Graduate Admission and Teaching Assistantship at the University of Colorado at Denver) and Andrew Bailey (Graduate Admission and Teaching Assistantship at Ohio State University) and Katherine Baucom received a Graduate Assistantship through the North Carolina Center for Sustainable Tourism. I'm currently working closely with Ahmed kar and Kaitlyn Miller to apply for graduate studies and scholarships in 2009.

2007-2008 - Graduate Certificate in Urban Design. This certificate program is proposed to accommodate the growing academic and professional interest in urban design as a critical tool to revitalize town centers of small and mid-size cities. The downtowns of small and mid-size American cities have steadily declined over the last four decades due to massive development on the urban fringe. The renewed interest of local, state, and federal governments to revamp ailing downtowns as part of a national 'smart growth' agenda has prompted a resurgence in urban design education and practice across the United States. Growing smart is a national strategic goal set to maintain the viability of existing towns and cities, preserve natural, economic, and cultural resources, and employ technology effectively so as to enhance living environments and facilitate community engagement and participation. The proposed certificate program will attract professional planners and graduate students from planning related disciplines to develop specialized skills in urban design and allow them to engage effectively in professional practice in the public and private sectors.

Student Assign-Students Advised (GRAD)

2007-2008 - 1 student, Advised Katherine Baucom on her research proposal for a Master's Thesis in Geography. Her research compares New Urbansit developments and conventional suburbs. The research aims to develop planning and design criteria that may guide the development of more livable neighborhoods.

2007-2008 - Integrated use of Centra for presentations. Centra worked very well with student presentations of country reports.

Distance Learning

2007-2008 - (1) I have increased the use of announcements to keep in touch with online students. I even use frequent announcements to tell my progress during grading cases or exams. I believe that this establishes a closer rapport with students.

(2) I integrated more special-topic help discussion boards in online classes. For each case analysis, an exam and major assignments, I open a special help board for that topic only. This provides the students with a better opportunity to identify questions and answers for a special assignment/task quickly.

Student Assign-Students Advised (UG)

2007-2008 - 20 students, (1) I interact with my advisees via email announcements and inform them about upcoming tasks such as preregistration, senior summaries etc., and also inform them about opportunities for scholarships and internships. (2) I also support advisees by writing recommendations for job aplications and scholarship applications.
