The Race Itself

Make sure that you get all runners, and any other equipment ready at the check in opening times on Sunday morning (see above). You must get ready at the above times – don't miss them. It is your responsibility to check into transition and be ready to race on time.

  • First waves start early at 08:30;

  • Make sure you arrive in good time (see below);

  • If your wave is later in the day then rest, you may want to watch others, but rest too as the nervous energy of being around the course will tire you out before you get into the water

      1. Wave Times

These times should be confirmed at registration.

      1. Swim

  • The swimming takes place at Doca dos Olivais, nearby Lisbon's Oceanary and Pavilhão Atlântico.

  • The swim will be one lap.

  • The run follows the Rossio dos Olivais, Porta do Tejo, Passeio das Tágides, Cais das Naus, Passeio do Tejo, Palco das Artes e Passeio do Sapal. After the turnaround, the course comes back on the same route.

Medical Services

Medical services will be available on-site on race day. Physicians with sports medicine training, nurses and physiotherapists will staff the medical tent. This service will be provided at no cost to athletes. The medical tent will be located as close to finish line as practical and athletes will be selected as they finish the race to determine whether medical care is required. There will be volunteers stationed along the course and the ambulance service will transport injured athletes to hospital if required.

Post Race
The medical tent will remain staffed until all athletes have completed the race.

Recovery Area
There will be a restricted access area where athletes can obtain food and fluids on completion of the race.

Food
There will be an assortment of fruits and drinks available in the recovery area for athletes only.

Massage
Volunteer massage therapists will provide 10 minutes post-race recovery massage.

Medical Insurance
It is strongly recommended that all athletes arrange private medical insurance prior to arrival in Lisbon. If you have an accident or health problem you must pay for your medical expenses at the time unless you have coverage.

Environmental Condition
Early May provides ideal race conditions with daily temperatures in the mid-twenty degree Celsius. Temperature of Doca dos Olivais water is 18º C up to 21º C.

Vaccines
Visitors to Portugal do not require any special vaccinations. It is prudent to ensure protection against the common communicable diseases such as Influenza and transmittable diseases such as hepatitis A and B.

Regular Medication
Athletes are advised to bring sufficient quantities of medications for personal use. It is wise to bring a letter from your personal doctor confirming your medical history and medication in case of emergency. If you have prescribed a medication that is for restricted use in the WASA code, please ensure that you have submitted a TUE with your triathlon federation.

Post Race

We’ll have great craic after the race when we can all meet up outside the Closing Party Venue (Deambulatório, Atlantic Pavillio) at 9:30pm. We want you all to have a great race and a good time afterwards, but please remember that you are representing your country and should behave in a manner befitting such!

      1. Anti-Doping Program

The information below is taken from the official information pack.
Important note for all competitors On behalf of the European Triathlon Union and the Portuguese Triathlon Federation, the host and organizer of the Lisbon Triathlon European Championships, we allow us to inform you about some important details in relation to the handling and execution of the current ITU anti-doping program during the event in Portugal.
During the world championships the ITU will carry out a high rate of doping controls. In conformity with the international standards for testing urine samples will be taken as well as blood samples. Thereby the junior-, U 23- and the elite-athletes will be also monitored as well as the Age Group athletes. The ITU intensifies its fight against doping by conducting strict pre competition controls beside the regular competition controls. In this context we want you to take notice of the following: According to the WADA-Code and rule 4.4. ITU anti-doping rules each participating athlete with documented medical conditions requiring the use of a prohibited substance or a prohibited method basically has to exhibit a therapeutic use exemption (TUE). Thereby each athlete is generally obliged to provide a TUE issued by ITU (rule 4.4.2.). For the purpose of these provisions and for the facilitation of the result management, the ITU and its anti-doping administrator accept the following:

  1. For athletes taking part at the ITU Age Group World Championships: the presentation of medical certificates including medical diagnosis and prescribed substances.

In relation to the facilitation for Age Group athletes the ITU reserves its right to evaluate their presented certificates and to deny the acceptance. I TU assumes no liability for drinks or food every athlete ingests during the race. ITU cautions all athletes about possible ingredients being part of the list of prohibited substances in context with ITU anti-doping rules and the WADA prohibited list. Also the intake of food supplements before and during the race - happens at athletes own risk. With possible ITU anti-doping rule violations in mind each athlete should urgently inform himself on the ingredients of these supplements before every intake. During the Triathlon European Championships 2008 testing will take place for the juniors, U23, elite and Age Groupers. In case of being tested the athlete needs to carry a copy of his identity card including a photo.

Policy: Any athlete can be chosen for random drug testing during training prior to the race and on completion of the race.

Procedure: Athletes will be notified immediately after the race and will be accompanied by the chaperone until a sample for analysis is provided. A team representative may accompany each competitor throughout the doping control procedures.
