Background
The IPP is an internet-based information system designed to hold phytosanitary information published in accordance with the International Plant Protection Convention, and decisions by the Interim Commission on Phytosanitary Measures. The system has recently been upgraded - following recommendations of the system support group - with improved features to allow IPPC contracting parties to use the system to meet their national information exchange obligations under the IPPC.
However, many members have still not designated their official contact point and a significant amount of contact point information is out of date and relative information still not included in the National section. There is need for capacity building of national contact points’ information exchange using the IPP. Only a limited number of Members have provided information to the Secretariat as specified in the IPPC.
To support contracting parties, the IPPC Secretariat is arranging a series of regional and sub-regional workshops during 2005. The purpose of these events will be to explain national phytosanitary information exchange obligations, and to provide basic training to official contact points (and/or nominated information officers) on how to use the IPP to meet these obligations.
The regional workshop on information exchange by using IPP for Asia is scheduled to be held in 2005. It will aim at creating awareness of the national information exchange obligations under the IPPC, trying to get countries to commit to using the IPP for information exchange, providing basic training on data entry, and identifying further regional and national needs.
In order to test the upgraded IPP and the training materials which have been prepared for the forthcoming regional workshop on using the IPP to meet reporting obligations under the IPPC, the IPPC Secretariat organized a pilot workshop.
The objective of the visit of reporting officer (RO) was to attend the pilot IPP workshop and to arrange a regional IPP workshop at the end of April (to be finalized).
