Hold the sampler in position on the substrate while checking for heavy organisms such as clams and snails in an area of about 0.25 m2 (0.5m wide net x 0.5m upstream) in front of the net. Hand-pick these organisms and place them in the net or the bucket if placed nearby. Do not collect large freshwater mussels! Some mussel species are endangered and should not be disturbed. Record their presence on the field form and identify them if possible.
